Chapter 2 - The House of Cards Trembles at Thirty Thousand Feet

The flight was supposed to be a celebration of the Sterling Group’s record-breaking fiscal year.

Inside the pressurized cabin,

the champagne flowed like water,

and the laughter of the executives filled the air.

Carter sat in his plush leather seat,

his hand resting casually on Khloe’s shoulder.

He felt invincible.

He felt like the king of the world,

having finally "put his wife in her place" in front of his entire inner circle.

“She’ll call you before we land,”

Khloe whispered,

her voice a purr as she leaned into him.

“She can’t survive without you,

Carter.

She needs your name.

She needs your status.”

Carter nodded,

a smug grin playing on his lips.

“She’s gotten too comfortable,”

he replied,

sipping his vintage Cristal.

“She thinks her family’s history matters in today’s market.

But I’m the one with the vision.

I’m the one the media calls the 'Tech Prophet'.”

His mother,

adjusting her diamond necklace,

nodded in agreement.

“You’ve been too soft on her,

son.

She should be grateful you haven't replaced her years ago.”

Suddenly,

the plane’s high-speed satellite Wi-Fi flickered.

The large monitors displayed across the cabin,

which were streaming the Sterling Group’s live stock price,

began to glitch.

The green line,

which had been steadily climbing,

suddenly stuttered.

Then,

it turned a violent,

angry red.

“What’s happening?”

one of the junior executives shouted from the back.

“The stock… it just dropped ten points in five seconds!”

Carter frowned,

setting his glass down.

“It’s probably just a glitch in the satellite feed.

Relax.”

But it wasn’t a glitch.

His phone,

resting on the armrest,

suddenly exploded with notifications.

Emails,

texts,

and news alerts flooded the screen so fast it began to heat up.

[URGENT: STERLING GROUP PATENTS REVOKED]

[ALERT: 1.5 BILLION DOLLAR DEBT RECALL INITIATED BY THE VANCE TRUST]

[BREAKING: SAMANTHA VANCE FILES FOR DIVORCE, CLAIMS FULL OWNERSHIP OF CORE IP]

Carter’s face went from smug to ghostly pale in a matter of seconds.

He tried to open his internal banking app to check the company’s liquidity,

but a message in stark,

white text appeared:

ACCESS DENIED. ACCOUNT FROZEN BY MAJORITY SHAREHOLDER.

“This is impossible,”

he hissed,

his fingers trembling as he tapped the screen.

“Samantha doesn't have the authority.

I’m the CEO!”

Across the aisle,

the Chief Financial Officer,

Mark,

was staring at his laptop with an expression of pure horror.

“Carter,”

Mark choked out,

his voice cracking.

“The 1.5 billion… it’s gone.

The Vance Trust just pulled the liquidity.

Our credit lines are being shut down by every major bank.

And the patents… Carter,

the patents aren’t registered to the company.

They’re registered to a holding firm owned solely by Samantha.”

The cabin,

once filled with the sounds of celebration,

was now as silent as a tomb.

The only sound was the hum of the engines,

a sound that now felt like the ticking of a time bomb.

Khloe pulled away from Carter,

her eyes darting around the cabin like a trapped animal.

She was a social climber,

and she could smell the scent of a falling empire.

“Carter?”

she asked,

her voice no longer a purr but a sharp,

anxious whine.

“What does this mean?”

Carter didn't answer.

He was staring at his phone,

watching as his net worth evaporated in real-time.

He tried to call Samantha,

but the call went straight to voicemail.

“Hello,

Carter,”

her recorded voice said,

sounding bored and elegant.

“I told you I knew my place.

I hope you’re enjoying the view from yours.

It’s a long way down.”

The plane hit a pocket of turbulence,

shaking the cabin violently.

A glass of champagne fell from the table,

shattering against the floor,

soaking Khloe’s expensive dress.

She screamed,

but no one looked at her.

They were all looking at Carter,

the man they had followed into the clouds,

May you like

realizing he had no parachute.

And they were still five hours away from landing.
