Chapter 12 - The Dawn of Vance Technologies

The first day of the new era began at precisely 8:00 AM.

I stood in front of the mirrored glass of my dressing room,

adjusting the lapels of a charcoal-grey suit.

I didn't wear jewelry today,

save for a simple,

elegant watch that had belonged to my father.

I didn't need diamonds to show my power.

My power was in my name.

As my car pulled up to the headquarters,

a sea of reporters was already gathered behind the barricades.

The flashbulbs were a constant,

staccato rhythm,

blinding and aggressive.

“Ms. Vance!

Over here!”

“Is it true that the Sterling Group is bankrupt?”

“What is your comment on your husband’s arrest?”

I didn't stop.

I didn't smile.

I walked up the steps with my head held high,

my security team clearing a path through the chaos.

When I entered the lobby,

the transformation was already underway.

The massive chrome "STERLING" letters had been removed,

leaving behind faint outlines on the marble wall—shadows of a man who no longer existed.

In their place,

a temporary digital banner flickered to life:

VANCE TECHNOLOGIES: THE FUTURE IS OURS.

The employees were lined up in the atrium,

hundreds of them,

watching me with a mixture of fear and awe.

They had spent years seeing me as the quiet wife in the background.

Now,

they were seeing the woman who had effectively decapitated the leadership in a single weekend.

I stepped onto the small podium in the center of the room.

I didn't need a microphone;

the room was so silent you could hear the hum of the air conditioning.

“For four years,”

I began,

my voice clear and resonant,

“this company has been built on a foundation of stolen ideas and hollow promises.

The man who led you was a mask.

The success you celebrated was a debt that was never meant to be paid.”

I paused,

letting my gaze sweep across the room.

I saw some of the junior developers,

the ones who had actually done the work while Carter took the credit.

I saw the hope in their eyes.

“Today,

the mask is gone.

The debt has been collected.

I am here to tell you that Vance Technologies is not just a name change.

It is a return to integrity.

I am opening the 'Apex' source code to every lead developer in this room.

We are going to rebuild it,

not as a tool for greed,

but as a monument to innovation.”

A low murmur of excitement rippled through the crowd.

In the tech world,

opening a proprietary code like Apex was unheard of.

It was a gesture of ultimate confidence.

“As for your jobs,”

I continued,

“those who worked with honesty will find their salaries increased by twenty percent,

effective immediately.

Those who helped Carter Sterling hide his crimes will find their belongings at the front desk by noon.”

I stepped down from the podium,

the silence breaking into a roar of applause.

It wasn't the polite applause they used to give Carter.

It was the sound of a workforce that finally felt seen.

I walked toward the elevators,

where Marcus,

my lawyer,

was waiting.

“The board of directors from our rival,

Omni-Corp,

is on line one,”

he said,

his eyes gleaming.

“They want to discuss a merger now that Sterling is out of the way.”

“Tell them I’m not interested in a merger,”

I said,

entering the elevator.

“If they want to survive the next fiscal year,

they can prepare a proposal for me to buy them.”

The elevator doors closed,

cutting off the noise of the lobby.

As the numbers climbed toward the top floor,

I felt a sense of peace.

The revenge was satisfying,

yes.

But the rebuilding was where the real joy lay.

I walked into the CEO’s office—my office.

I opened the window and let the fresh air blow away the scent of Carter’s expensive cologne.

I sat at the desk and opened a new file on my computer.

The title was simple:

VANCE TECH: YEAR ZERO.

The world thought the story was about the fall of a man.

They didn't realize it was actually about the rise of the woman he tried to hide.
