Chapter 9 - THE FAMILY WE CHOOSE

The next morning, the Moretti mansion was quiet.
The broken glass had been swept away. The police had left.
Sunlight streamed through the dining room windows.
Teresa sat at the head of the table.
Luca sat on her right. Gabriel sat on her left. Sophie was on Gabriel’s lap, eating pancakes.
It was the first time the family had been whole in five years.
I walked in carrying a pot of fresh coffee.
“Hannah, please sit,” Teresa commanded gently.
“Oh, I have to finish the laundry—”
“I hired a service,” Luca said, pulling out a chair beside him. “Sit.”
I awkwardly sat down.
Luca slid a thick envelope across the table toward me.
“What is this?” I asked.
“Your mother’s medical bills,” Luca said. “Paid in full. Plus the next five years of her mortgage.”
I gasped, covering my mouth. “Luca, I can’t accept this.”
“You saved our family,” Gabriel said, pouring syrup on Sophie’s plate. “It’s the least we can do.”
Teresa reached across the table and took my hand.
Her grip was stronger today.
“You believed in me when my own son told me I was useless,” Teresa said, her eyes shining. “You gave me back my dignity.”
I wiped a tear from my cheek. “You did the hard work, Mrs. Moretti.”
“I have something for you,” Teresa said.
She pulled out the little blue card.
The one she had struggled to write the night before.
She slid it across the table to me.
I looked down.
Beneath the message to Sophie, and beneath Gabriel’s name, she had written one more line.
Thank you, Hannah.
Her handwriting was perfectly steady.
I looked up at her, smiling through my tears.
For the first time in my life, I felt like I wasn't just a maid struggling to survive.
I felt safe.
Luca watched me, a warm, genuine smile on his face.
“We want you to stay, Hannah,” Luca said. “Not as a housekeeper. As my mother’s companion. As a part of this house.”
Sophie cheered, clapping her hands.
Gabriel raised his coffee mug to me.
I looked around the table. At the mafia boss who had found his heart. At the exiled brother who came home. At the little girl who finally had her grandmother back.
And at the elderly woman who refused to let anyone erase her name.
“I would love to stay,” I said.
The nightmare was over.
Michael and Vanessa were in federal custody, their lies exposed.
The Bellini family was dismantled.
May you like
The Moretti family was broken, battered, but finally, truly healed.
And as Teresa picked up her fork with a steady hand, I knew that no one would ever try to silence her again.
