Chapter 4 - THE POISON IN THE BLOODLINE

My hands shook so badly that the papers rattled.
Vanessa was Luca’s sister?
It didn't make any sense. Luca’s family was Italian mafia royalty; his parents had died in a car crash when he was a teenager. He had always claimed to be an only child. Vanessa had arrived in Chicago five years ago, claiming to be the daughter of a wealthy Venetian importer. She had integrated herself into Luca’s life smoothly, seducing him while he was still mourning his lost wife.
But if she was his sister... why would she pretend to be his fiancée?
I flipped to the second document. It was a psychiatric evaluation from a private facility in Switzerland, dated twelve years ago.
Patient: Vanessa Moretti.
Diagnosis: Severe Narcissistic Personality Disorder with violent psychopathic tendencies. Patient exhibits extreme obsession with her older brother, Luca, and demonstrates a lethal jealousy toward any female figures in his life.
My stomach violently turned. She hadn't just faked her identity. She had infiltrated her own brother's life because she was dangerously obsessed with him.
"Emily, what's wrong?" Maria asked, stepping closer. "You're pale as a ghost."
Before I could answer, a massive, earth-shaking crash echoed from the far side of the estate.
The greenhouse. Luca had broken down the cellar door.
"Stay with him," I told Maria, shoving the papers into my apron pocket. "Do not let anyone in this kitchen."
I ran out of the kitchen, down the long corridor, and burst through the back doors into the cold night air. The glass greenhouse loomed in the darkness, lit only by the harsh tactical flashlights of Luca’s men.
I sprinted toward the open trapdoor hidden beneath the rose beds.
I scrambled down the concrete steps into the damp, freezing cellar. The smell of mildew and stale air hit me instantly.
"Luca, please!" Natalie's voice was screaming, hysterical.
I pushed past two guards at the bottom of the stairs and froze.
At the far end of the cellar, huddled in the corner of a rusted iron cage, was a woman.
She was devastatingly thin, her cheekbones sharp and hollow. Her hair, once long, was chopped into a jagged, uneven bob. She wore a filthy gray sweat-suit, and her wrists were bruised from zip-ties.
But her eyes—bright, terrified, and piercingly blue—were unmistakable.
It was Caroline Moretti.
Luca was on his knees in front of the cage, his massive hands gripping the iron bars. He was crying. The ruthless, untouchable mafia boss was sobbing, his tears cutting tracks through the dust on his face.
"Caroline," he choked out, reaching through the bars. "God, Caroline, I’m here. I’m right here."
Caroline scrambled backward, pressing her spine against the stone wall. She wrapped her arms around her head, shaking violently. "No, no, no! The red lady said if I talk to the shadows, she’ll hurt my baby! Please, don't hurt Leo!"
"He's safe!" Natalie cried, dropping to her knees beside Luca. "Carrie, it's me! It's Nat! Your baby is safe, he's inside the house!"
Caroline stopped. She slowly lowered her arms. Her blue eyes darted from Natalie to Luca, her mind struggling to pierce through years of psychological torment and heavy sedation.
"Luca?" she whispered, her voice gravelly and weak.
"Yes," Luca sobbed, ripping at the iron door handle. "Get me the bolt cutters! Now!"
One of the guards handed him a massive pair of steel cutters. Luca snapped the padlock in half like it was made of plastic. He threw the door open and crawled into the cage, pulling Caroline into his arms.
She collapsed against his chest, burying her face in his neck, releasing a wail of pure agony that had been trapped for six years.
I stood in the doorway, tears streaming down my face.
But as I watched them, my hand brushed against my apron pocket. The papers.
Vanessa’s secret.
Suddenly, I remembered the words Vanessa had said to me just yesterday when she ordered me to clean the guest room.
“Make sure the windows are locked, Emily. We wouldn't want the poor guest to have an accident and fall out. The drop to the courtyard is quite lethal.”
She wasn't planning on keeping Caroline captive anymore. She had brought Natalie here tonight to witness Caroline’s "suicide." With Caroline officially dead again, and Natalie as a witness, Vanessa would have permanently secured her place at Luca's side.
"Mr. Moretti," I said, my voice trembling but loud enough to break through the emotional reunion.
Luca didn't let go of his wife, but he turned his head toward me.
I pulled the papers from my pocket and walked forward. "You need to see this. Leo had it hidden in his bear. Caroline hid it there."
Luca gently pulled back from Caroline. He took the plastic bag from my hands.
As he read the DNA test, and then the psychiatric evaluation, the air in the cellar turned to ice.
He didn't yell. He didn't scream.
He just slowly stood up.
He looked at Caroline. "She's... my sister?"
Caroline nodded weakly, her tears falling. "Your father locked her in the asylum when you were little. He wiped her from all the family records to protect you. She found me six years ago on the boat. She pushed me off... but she pulled me out downriver. She kept me chained in an abandoned farmhouse until last week."
Luca's face went completely blank. It was the face of a man who had crossed the line between fury and execution.
He turned to his lead guard. "Take my wife and sister-in-law to the master suite. Surround the room. Nobody goes in except Emily."
"Luca, what are you going to do?" Natalie asked, terrified.
May you like
Luca didn't look back as he walked toward the stairs.
"I'm going to my office," he said, his voice void of all humanity. "To have a family reunion."
