Chapter 9: The Last Promise

I didn’t speak to my father that night.

Not because I hated him.

Because I was afraid of what I might hear.

My entire life, I had believed my father was the one person who would always tell me the truth.

But now there was another secret.

Another thing everyone knew except me.

The next morning, I found him sitting alone in the backyard.

The same place he used to sit with my mother.

I stood there for a moment.

Then I walked over.

“Dad.””

He looked up.

His eyes already told me.

He knew what I wanted to ask.

“Sit down.””

I did.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Finally, he said:

“Your grandfather told the truth.””

My heart sank.

“You hid something.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked toward the garden.

“Because your mother asked me to.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Your mother made me promise.””

“Promise what?””

“To protect you from the truth until you were ready.””

I shook my head.

“I’m nineteen.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

My father took a deep breath.

“The night before your mother died, she confronted your grandfather.””

I felt cold.

“Why?””

“Because she found out he was trying to access your trust.””

“And?””

“She told him he would never touch it.””

I looked down.

“What happened?””

My father’s voice became quieter.

“He threatened her.””

My chest tightened.

“What did he say?””

“He said if she stood in his way, he would destroy our family.””

I felt tears forming.

“My mother was scared?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she didn’t want you carrying that fear.””

I looked away.

“She always protected me.””

My father nodded.

“She loved you more than anything.””

I wiped my eyes.

“But what happened that night?””

My father closed his eyes.

“The argument happened at our house.””

“With Grandpa?””

“Yes.””

“Was Jessica there?””

“No.””

“Then why did Grandpa involve her?””

“Because after your mother died, he realized he couldn’t get the money directly.””

“So he waited.””

“Yes.””

I sat quietly.

Everything connected.

Jessica.

The demands.

The pressure.

The lies.

But there was one thing I still didn’t understand.

“How did Mom die?””

My father looked down.

“She had a medical emergency.””

“I know that.””

He nodded.

“But before the ambulance came, she gave me instructions.””

“About me?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

My father’s voice cracked.

“She said, ‘Don’t let Jasmine grow up believing people are only valuable because of what they can give.’”

I started crying.

Because those words explained everything.

My mother knew the world would try to convince me otherwise.

She knew people might see my inheritance before they saw me.

My father reached into his pocket.

“I kept this for years.””

He handed me a small envelope.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

My mother.

“Another letter?””

He nodded.

“She wrote it after that night.””

I opened it.

The first words made me stop.

My Jasmine,

If you ever feel betrayed by people you love, remember this: betrayal does not erase the love that came before it.

I continued reading.

People are complicated. Some people hurt others because they are cruel. Some hurt others because they are lost.

But you are not responsible for saving everyone.

My hands shook.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

Choose people who choose you.

I closed my eyes.

Because suddenly I understood.

My mother wasn’t asking me to forgive Jessica.

She wasn’t asking me to trust everyone.

She was teaching me to protect my heart.

A month later, Jessica and Ethan moved into a small apartment nearby.

Ethan started working part-time.

Jessica began paying off her debts.

And surprisingly, she kept her promise.

She never asked me for money again.

One afternoon, she called me.

“I wanted to tell you something.””

I sat quietly.

“What?””

“I found a job.””

I smiled slightly.

“That’s good.””

“Yes.””

There was a pause.

“I know I don’t deserve it, but thank you for not destroying me.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“You could have told everyone what I did.””

“I still could.””

“Yes.””

“But I didn’t.””

Jessica was quiet.

“Why?””

I looked out the window.

“Because my mother taught me not to become someone who hurts people just because they hurt me.””

Jessica started crying.

“I miss her.””

I believed her.

Because some feelings could be complicated.

“I do too.””

That evening, my father gave me the final document from my mother’s estate.

There was one last condition attached to my trust.

A condition nobody knew about.

Not Jessica.

Not Grandpa.

Not even my father.

I opened the document.

And my eyes widened.

Because my mother had added one final instruction.

The money would only fully belong to me if I made a choice.

A choice that would determine my future.

At the bottom of the page were her final words:

Jasmine, wealth can reveal people’s hearts. But your choice will reveal yours.

May you like

And below that was the decision I never expected.

I had to decide what to do with the inheritance that caused my family to fall apart.
