Chapter 17 - No More Lies

Margaret lunged for Daniel’s microphone.
He stepped away.
The doors opened.
Investigators entered.
“Margaret Carter, don't move.”
For once, Margaret had no prepared expression.
No calm smile.
No grieving-grandmother performance.
Only panic.
“You set me up!”
Daniel looked at her.
“No. I asked questions.”
“You betrayed your own mother.”
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“You made my wife die believing she had to protect our son from you.”
Margaret pointed at him.
“Claire turned you against this family!”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice remained quiet.
“You did.”
Investigators detained Margaret.
She didn't leave gracefully.
She screamed about the Carter name.
About everything she had sacrificed.
About Claire being ungrateful.
Then she shouted the sentence that ended any remaining sympathy Daniel had for her.
“That child cost me everything!”
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
“No.”
He faced Margaret.
“You did that yourself.”
Outside, Margaret was placed into a waiting vehicle.
The corporate jet never departed.
Over the following weeks, charges accumulated.
Financial fraud.
Forgery.
Conspiracy.
Evidence tampering.
Offenses connected to the fraudulent trust documents.
And charges arising from the staircase incident.
Stephen Cole cooperated.
Evelyn cooperated.
Dr. Bell was located in Arizona and questioned about the fraudulent DNA report.
The web Margaret built began collapsing from every direction.
But Daniel still faced one painful task.
Claire’s name had never publicly been cleared.
For eighteen months, relatives had whispered that Noah might not be Daniel’s son.
Margaret had encouraged those whispers.
Daniel requested a formal family meeting.
Every Carter relative who had repeated the rumor received an invitation.
Margaret’s empty chair remained at the head of the table.
Daniel placed two documents in front of everyone.
The genuine DNA report.
And Claire’s letter.
Then he said:
“My wife never cheated on me.”
Nobody spoke.
“I doubted her because I trusted the wrong person.”
Daniel looked around the room.
“If any of you ever called Noah illegitimate, you owe an apology to a woman who isn't here to hear it.”
An elderly aunt began crying.
Daniel wasn't finished.

“There is one more thing.”
Rebecca entered carrying William Carter’s original trust.
