Chapter 12 - William Carter’s Secret

Evelyn surrendered the next afternoon.
With immunity negotiations underway, she began talking.
William Carter, Daniel’s father, had discovered years earlier that Margaret was moving money out of the family company.
Small amounts at first.
Then millions.
He quietly changed his estate plan.
The first biological grandchild would receive not only assets.
That child’s trustee—initially the child's parent—would receive access to certain sealed company records.
Daniel stared at Evelyn.
“What records?”
“Your father’s private audit.”
Daniel understood.
When Noah was born, Daniel would gain access as Noah’s father.
The audit would expose Margaret.
That was why Noah couldn't legally be William’s first grandchild.
Margaret needed another child to inherit first.
A child she controlled.
Lucas.
A child who existed only on paper.
“Why Michael?” Daniel asked.
“Because he was dead.”
Evelyn looked ashamed.
“He couldn't deny paternity.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“And when Claire became pregnant?”
“Margaret panicked.”
Claire had accidentally found references to Lucas while helping Daniel sort estate records.
She immediately noticed the dates didn't make sense.
Then she found the trust clause.
Evelyn began crying.
“Claire came to me.”
“What did you tell her?”
“I told her to stop digging.”
“You could've helped her.”
“I know.”
“You could've told me.”
“I know.”
Daniel stood and walked toward the window.
Evelyn said:
“She wasn't afraid for herself.”
Daniel turned.
“She was afraid Margaret would turn you against Noah.”
And that was exactly what happened.
Margaret never needed to prove Claire unfaithful forever.
She only needed Daniel confused long enough for the estate transfer to remain unchallenged.
Then Evelyn revealed the final piece.
William had kept his audit somewhere Margaret could never access.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“Who does?”
“Claire did.”
Daniel stared at her.
“My wife?”
Evelyn nodded.
“Your father told Rebecca Sloan before he died. Rebecca told Claire after Noah was born.”
Daniel immediately called Rebecca.
She answered after the first ring.
Before Daniel could speak, Rebecca said:
“I wondered how long it would take Evelyn to tell you.”
“Where's my father’s audit?”
Rebecca paused.
“Claire hid it.”
May you like
“Where?”
“In something Margaret would never think was valuable.”
