Chapter 9 - THE SECRET OF THE MAID

The vault was completely silent.

The air already felt heavy.

Luca paced the small room like a caged tiger, pulling out his cell phone.

“No signal,” he cursed, throwing the phone onto the table. “The walls are three feet of steel and concrete.”

I stood near the safety deposit boxes, my heart pounding in my throat.

“Daniel will realize we’ve been down here too long,” I said, trying to stay calm.

“Matteo will tell Daniel we left through the back exit,” Luca said grimly. “By the time Daniel figures it out, we’ll be suffocated.”

He looked at me, his intense dark eyes filled with absolute regret.

“I’m sorry, Olivia. I dragged you into this. You should have stayed at the house.”

“I chose to come,” I said firmly.

I looked at the heavy steel door.

There was an electronic keypad on the inside, used for emergency overrides.

“Can we guess the code?” I asked.

“It’s a twelve-digit rolling cipher,” Luca scoffed. “Only the bank manager knows it.”

I walked over to the keypad.

I looked closely at the buttons. They were brushed steel.

“Mr. Moretti,” I said. “Do you have a flashlight on your phone?”

“Yes, but it won't help.”

“Just give it to me.”

Luca handed me his phone. I turned on the flashlight and held it at an angle against the keypad.

“When I worked at the flower shop,” I explained, my voice steady, “we had a digital safe. The owner never changed the code. Over time, the oils from our fingers wore down the matte finish on the specific numbers we pressed.”

Luca stepped closer, looking at the keypad.

Under the harsh angle of the light, four numbers shone slightly brighter than the rest, polished smooth by repeated use.

2, 5, 8, 0.

“It’s a four-digit code, repeated three times to make twelve digits,” I realized.

“There are twenty-four possible combinations of those four numbers,” Luca said, hope suddenly flashing in his eyes.

“Start typing,” I said.

Luca’s hands flew across the keypad.

2-5-8-0-2-5-8-0-2-5-8-0.

ERROR.

5-2-8-0-5-2-8-0-5-2-8-0.

ERROR.

We tried combination after combination.

The air was getting thinner. I felt lightheaded.

On the eighteenth try:

8-0-2-5-8-0-2-5-8-0-2-5.

The keypad beeped green.

The heavy steel bolts groaned, and the massive door swung open.

Fresh, cool air rushed into the vault.

I gasped, falling to my knees.

Luca caught me, pulling me up and out of the vault.

We ran up the stairs into the main lobby.

The bank manager was lying unconscious behind his desk. Matteo was nowhere to be seen.

Daniel burst through the front doors, guns drawn, having finally realized something was wrong.

“Boss! Are you okay?!”

“Where is Matteo?” Luca demanded.

“He just left in a black sedan! Heading north!”

“Get the cars. We’re ending this.”

Ten minutes later, we intercepted Matteo’s sedan on a deserted stretch of the industrial highway.

Luca’s armored SUVs pinned Matteo’s car against a concrete barrier.

Luca stepped out, his weapon drawn.

He didn't yell. He didn't hesitate.

He walked up to the driver's side window and smashed it with the butt of his gun.

He dragged his brother out of the car and threw him onto the pavement.

Matteo groaned, bleeding from his cheek.

“Where is the list?” Luca asked quietly.

Matteo laughed, a bitter, defeated sound.

“It’s over, Luca. I already uploaded it to a secure server. It sends to the FBI in ten minutes.”

Luca placed his boot on Matteo’s chest.

“Give me the cancellation code.”

“Or what? You kill me? I’m dead anyway.”

Luca looked at Daniel.

“Bring me the laptop from his car.”

Daniel retrieved the open laptop. The screen showed a countdown timer: 09:45.

Luca looked down at his brother.

“You think you’re smart, Matteo. But you’re arrogant.”

Luca knelt down and typed a single command into the laptop.

The screen flashed green.

UPLOAD CANCELLED. FILES DELETED.

Matteo’s eyes widened in sheer terror. “How did you know the password?!”

“Because you’re predictable,” Luca said coldly. “You used our mother’s maiden name. You always were a mama’s boy.”

Luca stood up.

“Take him to the warehouse. Let the council decide his fate.”

As they dragged Matteo away, Luca turned to me.

He closed the laptop and tossed it onto the hood of the car.

The danger was finally, truly gone.

Luca walked over to me.

He reached out and gently cupped my face.

“You saved my life in that vault,” Luca said softly.

“We saved each other,” I smiled.

He kissed me.

It wasn't a sudden, frantic kiss. It was deep, intentional, and filled with a profound sense of peace.

When he pulled away, he looked into my eyes.

“You are never going back to a maid’s room again, Olivia.”

And I never did.

The truth was exposed, the traitors were punished, and I found a family I never knew I needed.
