Chapter 12 - THE FINAL CONFRONTATION

I couldn't breathe.

My father? The man I mourned, the man whose medical bills I had struggled to pay, was a hitman for the New York mafia?

“You’re lying,” I choked out, tears of anger and confusion blinding me.

“I’m not!” Vanessa cried. “He goes by the name ‘The Florist’ because he used to own a flower shop! He’s in Chicago right now!”

Luca pulled me against his side, his protective instinct flaring.

“Daniel,” Luca barked. “Lock down the estate. Nobody gets within a mile of this property.”

Suddenly, the lights in the foyer flickered and died.

The backup generators didn't kick in.

The mansion was plunged into absolute darkness.

“He’s here,” Vanessa whispered in the dark, her voice trembling with pure terror.

“Protect Olivia and Leo!” Luca ordered his men, drawing his weapon.

A single, suppressed gunshot echoed through the dark foyer.

One of the guards dropped.

“Everyone down!” Daniel shouted.

I dropped to the marble floor, covering my head.

Through the massive front windows, a flash of lightning illuminated the room for a split second.

Standing in the center of the foyer, holding a silenced pistol, was a man.

I saw his face in the flash of light.

It was my father.

He looked older, harder, his eyes completely devoid of the warmth I remembered from my childhood.

“Dad?” I whispered into the darkness, my voice breaking.

The man paused. He turned toward the sound of my voice.

“Olivia?” his gruff voice echoed.

“Dad, what are you doing?!” I sobbed.

“I’m doing my job, Livvy,” he said coldly. “Step away from the target.”

“No!” I screamed, standing up in the dark, putting myself between him and Vanessa.

“Olivia, get down!” Luca roared, grabbing for me.

“Dad, you can't do this!” I cried. “You let mom and me think you were dead! We suffered for years!”

My father was silent for a moment.

“I did what I had to do to survive,” he said. “Now move. The commission wants her dead.”

“If you want to kill her, you have to shoot your own daughter,” I said firmly, standing my ground.

Another flash of lightning.

My father had his gun raised, pointed directly at my chest.

His hand was shaking.

“Livvy, please,” he begged.

“Drop the gun, Dad.”

For five agonizing seconds, the standoff held in the pitch black.

Then, the sound of a heavy metal pistol hitting the marble floor echoed through the room.

“I surrender,” my father whispered, his voice broken. “I can't shoot my little girl.”

The emergency lights finally flickered to life.

My father was on his knees, his hands on his head.

Luca’s guards immediately swarmed him, pinning him to the floor and zip-tying his wrists.

I fell into Luca’s arms, weeping uncontrollably.

Luca held me tight, kissing the top of my head.

“It’s over,” Luca promised softly. “It’s truly over.”

The police arrived shortly after. Vanessa was taken into protective custody, and my father was arrested for his crimes. He looked at me one last time as they led him away, his eyes filled with absolute regret.

I didn't say goodbye.

The next morning, the sun rose bright and warm over Chicago.

I stood on the terrace, looking out over the gardens. The past was painful, but it was finally behind me.

Luca walked out, wrapping his arms around me from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder.

“Are you okay?” he asked gently.

I looked down at the diamond ring on my finger.

I turned around and smiled at the man I loved.

May you like

“I’m perfect,” I said.

And as we stood in the morning light, I knew that no matter what the future held, we would face it together.
