Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden In The Hem

Luca’s hand remained perfectly still over Isabella’s trembling fingers.
The silence in the dining room was so absolute I could hear the rain lashing against the floor-to-ceiling windows. Fifty guests sat frozen, their expensive champagne warming in their hands.
Vanessa’s face went completely bloodless.
“Isabella,” Vanessa said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, terrifying whisper. “You are confused. The stress of the evening is making you hysterical.”
“I’m not confused,” Isabella cried, her tears ruining her makeup. “I saw her, Luca. I saw Elena.”
Victor Romano slammed his hand onto the marble table. The silverware rattled.
“This is absurd!” Victor shouted, his face purple with rage. “My wife died in a boating accident in Lake Michigan eighteen months ago. They never found the body, but she is dead!”
Luca slowly stood to his full height.
He didn’t look at Victor. He didn’t look at his sister.
His dark, hollow eyes were locked entirely on his fiancée.
“Vanessa,” Luca said softly. The quietness in his voice was far more terrifying than a shout. “Why did my sister visit a private psychiatric clinic last Thursday?”
“She didn’t!” Vanessa snapped, stepping backward. “Luca, she’s lying! She doesn’t want to marry Victor, so she’s inventing this insane story to ruin the night!”
“I have the visitor’s badge!” Isabella sobbed, reaching into her small silver clutch.
She pulled out a crumpled, laminated pass. Pine Ridge Sanctuary. Visitor: Isabella Moretti. Patient: Jane Doe.
Luca stared at the badge.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“You wore her wedding dress,” Luca whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. “The night I proposed to you in the gardens… you were wearing a vintage Vera Wang gown. You told me it belonged to your grandmother.”
Vanessa’s chest heaved. “It did! Luca, please—”
“No, it didn't,” I blurted out.
The entire room turned to look at me. My uniform was still dripping with the champagne Vanessa had thrown on me. My hands were shaking so violently I had to grip the edge of the table to stay upright.
“Emily, shut your mouth!” Vanessa screamed, her perfect facade completely shattering.
But I looked directly at Luca. I had nothing left to lose.
“Three months ago, Mrs. Bellini asked me to take that dress to the dry cleaners,” I said, my voice cracking before I forced it steady. “She told me to have it preserved in a box. But when I was inspecting it for stains… I found something.”
Luca took a slow step toward me. “What did you find, Emily?”
“There was a tear in the silk lining near the hem,” I explained, my heart hammering against my ribs. “I was going to stitch it before sending it out. But I felt something hard inside the fabric.”
Vanessa lunged across the table. “She’s a liar! She’s trying to extort us because of her mother’s mortgage!”
Before Vanessa could reach me, Luca’s head of security, a massive man named Thomas, stepped out of the shadows and grabbed Vanessa by the arm, pinning her in place.
“Let her go!” Victor yelled, stepping forward.
Luca didn’t even look at Victor. He just raised two fingers.
Immediately, three armed guards stepped into the room, locking the heavy mahogany doors. The guests gasped.
“What did you find in the hem, Emily?” Luca asked again.
I reached into my apron pocket. I had kept it. For three months, I didn’t know why, but a strange instinct had told me to hold onto it.
I pulled out a small, tarnished silver locket.
“This,” I whispered.
I handed it to Luca.
He popped the clasp open. Inside the locket wasn’t a picture. It was a tightly folded piece of paper.
Luca unfolded it carefully. His eyes scanned the text, and the color drained from his face.
“It’s a clinic intake form,” Luca said, his voice completely hollow. “Dated eighteen months ago. The day Elena Romano supposedly drowned.”
Victor stepped back, his eyes darting toward the locked doors.
“Read the signature, sir,” I whispered.
Luca’s eyes dropped to the bottom of the page.
“Patient signature… Elena Romano,” Luca read aloud. Then he looked up, his eyes burning with a rage that made the room temperature drop. “Admitting sponsor… Vanessa Bellini.”
Vanessa let out a choked sob, falling to her knees on the marble floor.
“Luca, let me explain,” she begged.
But Luca was staring at the back of the paper.
“There’s an emergency contact listed here,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a deadly calm. He looked directly at me. “Emily… why is your mother listed as Elena’s emergency contact?”
My world stopped.
“What?” I gasped.
“Sarah Carter,” Luca read. “Ashland Avenue.”
I stumbled backward, bumping into a serving cart. My mother? My sweet, overworked mother who baked cookies on Sundays and worked double shifts at the hospital?
Before I could answer, Victor Romano suddenly reached inside his jacket.
“Nobody moves!” Victor shouted.

He pulled out a sleek, black handgun and aimed it directly at Isabella’s head.
