Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO HELD THE KEY

“Why is your name on my wife's storage account?”
Luca held the receipt inches from Daniel Price's face.
Daniel looked from the paper to Luca's hand around his wrist.
“Because Mrs. Moretti asked me to arrange it.”
“Caroline trusted you with these records?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she tell our son not to follow you?”
Daniel swallowed.
“I don't know.”
Luca released him.
“Try again.”
Daniel straightened his jacket.
“Mrs. Moretti was frightened during the last months of her life. She believed someone was taking advantage of your business arrangements.”
“And you helped her?”
“At first.”
Those two words changed everything.
Richard moved closer.
“What do you mean, at first?”
Daniel glanced toward Benjamin.
“Not in front of the boy.”
For once, I agreed with him.
Whatever had happened between Caroline and the Bellinis, Benjamin had already heard far too much.
I knelt beside him.
“Sweetheart, how about those pancakes?”
He looked toward Luca.
“Will Daddy come?”
Luca crouched beside us.
“I need to finish something important. Then I'll come upstairs, all right?”
Benjamin studied his father's face.
“You promise?”
“I promise.”
The little boy held out his pinky.
Luca hooked his finger around it.
Then Benjamin handed him the red balloon.
“Keep my wish.”
Luca's expression softened.
“I will.”
I took Benjamin downstairs, where the kitchen staff had gathered in anxious little groups.
Nobody asked questions.
They'd all heard enough.
I helped him sit at the breakfast counter and brought out the pancake batter.
He watched me pour a small dinosaur shape into the skillet.
“Miss Emily?”
“Yes?”
“Do you think Vanessa hates me?”
I nearly dropped the spatula.
“Why would you think that?”
“She says everything was easier before I started crying.”
I turned off the burner.
Then I sat beside him.
“Benjamin, missing your mother isn't something you do wrong.”
He picked at the cuff of his jacket.
“Daddy doesn't cry.”
“Sometimes grown-ups cry where children can't see.”
“Does that mean he's sad too?”
“Yes.”
Benjamin thought about that.
“Maybe we could be sad together.”
My throat tightened.
“I think he'd like that very much.”
Upstairs, voices rose briefly.
Then stopped.
I tried not to listen.
But fifteen minutes later, Luca appeared in the kitchen doorway.
His face was drawn.
His tie had disappeared.
And he was carrying the red balloon.
Benjamin scrambled off his stool.
“Daddy!”
Luca caught him.
“Hey, buddy.”
“Look. Dinosaur pancakes.”
“I see that.”
“I made one for you.”
For several seconds, Luca simply held his son.
Then he sat down and ate the pancake, even though it had gone cold.
I watched Benjamin relax with every bite his father took.
It was such a small thing.
Yet it meant more to that boy than the grand engagement dinner downstairs.
After Benjamin finished eating, Luca asked me to help him into his pajamas.
At the foot of the staircase, he stopped me.
“Emily.”
I turned.
“Sir?”
“Thank you.”
“You don't have to thank me.”
“Yes,” he said quietly. “I do.”
He looked toward the kitchen.
“I've been so busy trying to give Benjamin a secure future that I almost let someone take away his present.”
I didn't know how to answer.
Then he added, “Daniel claims Caroline used my name because she didn't want the storage company contacting our house. He says he was instructed to deliver the records if anything happened to her.”
“Then why didn't he?”
“Because he says she changed her mind.”
“Do you believe him?”
Luca looked toward the red balloon.
“Not anymore.”
An hour later, Benjamin was asleep.
I found Luca in Caroline's sewing room.
The brass key, photograph, and receipt lay across the table.
Richard stood near the window.
Daniel was seated in a chair, watched by two members of Luca's security staff.
Luca gestured for me to enter.
“Emily, I want you to hear something.”
Daniel looked irritated.
“With respect, sir, this is private family business.”
Luca didn't look at him.
“Emily is the reason my son is still in this house tonight. She stays.”
Richard unfolded a photocopied agreement.
“I found the original financing reference in my files.”
He placed it beside Caroline's receipt.
“Box 4127 wasn't simply storage. It was a records escrow set up to preserve evidence of the Bellini property's financing.”
Luca frowned.
“Why would Caroline use my name?”
“Because the records related to a transaction conducted through your holding company.”
Luca stared at him.
“My holding company never borrowed from your father.”
Richard hesitated.
“No. But Daniel managed its administrative filings.”
Luca looked toward the estate manager.
Daniel said nothing.
Richard continued.
“The Bellinis were desperate for financing. Dad had already committed millions to investors. He needed property security his lenders would accept.”
“The mansion,” Luca said.
“Yes.”
“But Caroline's trust prevented that.”
Richard nodded.
“And that's where everything began.”
Luca pulled out the chair opposite Daniel.
“Tell me what you did.”
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“I processed a preliminary collateral schedule. I was told it was a routine refinancing proposal.”
“Who told you?”
“Anthony.”
“You took instructions about my property from another family's businessman?”
“He said you'd approved it.”
Luca gave him a hard look.
“And you believed him?”
Daniel's voice cracked.
“I was having financial problems. My wife had just started treatment for a serious illness. Anthony knew I needed money.”
Richard looked at him sharply.
“He paid you?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Luca leaned forward.
“How much?”
“Twenty thousand dollars.”
The room fell silent.
Daniel's eyes reddened.
“I thought I was helping arrange a legitimate deal. When Caroline confronted me, I realized the documents weren't what I'd been told.”
“And then?”
“She demanded everything I had.”
“Did you give it to her?”
“Yes. Copies. Payment records. Correspondence.”
“Where are they?”
Daniel looked at the receipt.
“In the box.”
“Then why didn't you tell me after she died?”
Daniel lowered his head.
“Anthony warned me that the paperwork carried my signature too. He said if I exposed it, I'd lose my job and possibly face charges.”
Luca stood.
“So you let him threaten my son's home instead.”
Daniel's silence answered him.
Richard folded the agreement slowly.
“There is something else.”
Luca looked at him.
“The box can only be released through the storage company's original escrow instructions. Their office is closed until Monday.”
“That's three days away.”
“Unless Caroline designated an emergency release procedure.”
Daniel shook his head.
“She didn't.”
Richard studied the receipt.
“Actually, there's a reference to one.”
He pointed to tiny lettering beneath the account number.
Emergency release: upon verified threat to minor beneficiary's residence.
Luca read it twice.
“Benjamin qualifies.”
“Possibly,” Richard said. “But the company will need proof.”
Luca picked up the forged placement authorization.
“Then we have proof.”
Daniel suddenly stood.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
“You don't understand. If you request that box, Anthony will know.”
Luca stared at him.
“Let him.”
Daniel shook his head.
“He doesn't care about the original loan anymore.”
“Then what does he care about?”
Daniel looked toward Caroline's photograph.
“The evidence she collected included something nobody was supposed to see.”
Richard frowned.
“What evidence?”
Daniel's voice became barely audible.
“A payment record from the night Caroline was taken to the hospital.”
Luca went still.
“My wife died of complications from a heart condition.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
“Then what does a payment record have to do with her hospitalization?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Because the payment wasn't made to a doctor.”
Luca stepped closer.
“Who was it made to?”
Daniel opened his eyes.
“To the private security company that controlled access to this mansion that night.”
Richard stared at him.
“Why would Anthony Bellini pay household security?”
Daniel looked directly at Luca.
“Because someone ordered the front gate kept closed while Caroline was waiting for an ambulance.”
For several seconds, Luca couldn't speak.
May you like
Then Daniel whispered the words that changed the meaning of everything we'd discovered.
“And the order was issued under your name.”
