Chapter 5: Twenty-Four Hours Before Her Death
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Detective Miller lowered the photograph.
Ethan stood behind me, his face frozen in horror.
Vanessa looked as though she wanted to swallow the words she had just spoken.
I finally found my voice.
"What did you just say?""
She shook her head.
"I didn't mean it like that.""
"You said you told Sarah she had twenty-four hours left to live.""
"I was warning her!""
"About what?""
Vanessa glanced at Detective Miller, then back at me.
"I can't explain this in the doorway.""
I stepped aside.
"Then explain it inside.""
Detective Miller entered the house, introduced herself formally, and asked everyone to sit down. She made it clear that she was not there to arrest anyone, but she would be recording the conversation with our consent.
Vanessa refused to answer questions without a lawyer.
The detective accepted that and turned her attention to me.
"Mr. Carter, I need to establish what you knew about your former wife's final day.""
"Sarah and I were separated, but we spoke regularly about Emily. I last spoke to her on October 12. She sounded worried, but she wouldn't tell me why.""
"Did she mention Vanessa?""
"No.""
"Did she tell you she was afraid someone might harm her?""
I hesitated.
"Not directly.""
Detective Miller opened her folder.
"Three years ago, an investigator received a report that Sarah believed her car had been tampered with. The report was logged, but the follow-up was incomplete. A second statement was later filed under your name, indicating that you had dismissed the concern as unfounded.""
"I never made that statement.""
"I understand.""
"Do you?""
She met my eyes.
"That's why I'm here.""
She removed a photocopy from the folder and placed it on the table.
It was the same report Ethan had found.
But this copy included a page I hadn't seen.
At the bottom was a handwritten note:
Call received from witness V. Carter. Witness says she has spoken with the victim and believes the situation has been resolved.
I stared at the words.
"Vanessa, did you tell investigators that Sarah was no longer afraid?""
Vanessa sat rigidly on the sofa.
"I was trying to calm things down.""
"Did you tell them she was safe?""
"I thought she was.""
"Based on what?""
She looked at her hands.
"She said she would stop investigating.""
"What was she investigating?""
Vanessa's eyes flickered toward Detective Miller.
The detective leaned forward.
"Mrs. Carter, you can decline to answer, but I need you to understand that withholding information about a potentially deliberate death can have serious consequences.""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Sarah had discovered that someone was using her identity.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"Someone had opened accounts in her name. There were documents she hadn't signed, financial records she couldn't explain, and messages sent from an email address she didn't recognize.""
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"She was afraid you'd think she was losing her mind.""
The words hit harder than I expected.
I remembered Sarah's last few months. The missed calls. The conversations that ended abruptly. The way she sometimes looked over her shoulder when we met to exchange Emily.
I had assumed she was struggling with the separation.
Perhaps she had been struggling with something far worse.
"Who was using her identity?"" I asked.
Vanessa didn't answer.
Detective Miller closed her folder.
"Mrs. Carter, did you know Sarah before you met James?""
Vanessa's silence stretched.
"Yes.""
"How?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Three years before Sarah died, I worked for a private administrative company. We handled financial records, insurance paperwork, and legal documents for several clients. Sarah came to our office because she believed someone had accessed her personal information.""
"And you helped her?""
"At first.""
"What happened afterward?""
Vanessa rubbed her palms against her trousers.
"I found discrepancies in the records. When I tried to report them, my supervisor told me to stop asking questions.""
"Who was your supervisor?""
She closed her eyes.
"Daniel Whitmore.""
Detective Miller's expression changed slightly.
She wrote the name down.
"Was he connected to Sarah's accident?""
"I don't know.""
"Did he threaten either of you?""
Vanessa nodded.
"He told me that if I kept helping Sarah, I would lose my job. Then he said he knew where Ethan went to school.""
Ethan stood abruptly.
"You never told me that!""
Vanessa looked at him.
"I was trying to protect you.""
"You keep saying that!""
His voice cracked.
"You told me my father was dangerous. You told me he would take me away if I ever spoke to him. You told me I had to do whatever you said because you were the only person who cared about me!""
Vanessa began to cry.
"Ethan, I was scared.""
"So was Emily!""
He turned away, pressing his fists against his eyes.
I wanted to comfort him, but my own mind was unraveling.
"Why did you marry me?"" I asked Vanessa.
She looked up.
"What?""
"Did you meet me by accident? Or did you know who I was before you approached me?""
Vanessa said nothing.
I felt the answer before she spoke.
"You knew Sarah. You knew about Emily. You knew I was her husband.""
"I didn't plan to fall in love with you.""
"That wasn't my question.""
Vanessa's chin trembled.
"I met you because Sarah asked me to keep an eye on Emily.""
I stared at her.
"Sarah asked you to do what?""
"She thought someone might try to use Emily to get to her. She wanted to make sure your daughter was safe.""
"And you decided the best way to do that was to marry me?""
"No! It wasn't like that!""
"Then explain it!""
Vanessa stood, crying openly now.
"After Sarah died, I couldn't stop thinking about Emily. I knew she was vulnerable, and I knew the people who had threatened Sarah hadn't disappeared. When I learned that you were raising her alone, I wanted to help.""
"You could have told me everything.""
"I was afraid you wouldn't believe me.""
"So you lied instead.""
"I thought I could protect both of you without involving you in something dangerous.""
Detective Miller interrupted.
"Mrs. Carter, when did you last speak to Sarah?""
Vanessa wiped her face.
"October 14. At St. Mary's Hospital.""
"Why was she there?""
"She had been receiving threatening messages. She wanted to meet me somewhere public.""
"What did you tell her?""
Vanessa's eyes lowered.
"I told her the people involved had found out what she knew. I told her she needed to leave town with Emily.""
"Did she agree?""
"No.""
"Why not?""
"She said she wouldn't run away from her own life. She said she was going to tell James everything.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"Why didn't she call me?""
Vanessa looked at me with an expression so full of regret that, for one dangerous moment, I almost believed her.
"Because I begged her not to. I told her that if she contacted you, they'd know where to find you.""
"And you believed that?""
"Yes.""
Detective Miller wrote something in her notebook.
"What happened after the hospital meeting?""
Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Sarah left first. I stayed behind for a while. When I got home, I received a message telling me that if Sarah spoke to the police, she would regret it.""
"Did you contact the police?""
"No.""
"Why?""
"Because I was terrified.""
Detective Miller paused.
"Mrs. Carter, did you see Sarah's car before the accident?""
Vanessa went completely still.
I turned toward her.
"Answer her.""
She shook her head.
"I don't remember.""
Detective Miller repeated the question.
"Did you see Sarah's car on October 14?""
Vanessa's breathing became shallow.
Then she whispered, "Yes.""
"Where?""
"At the garage where she had taken it for an inspection.""
My heart pounded.
"Why were you there?""
"I was trying to find out whether the brakes had been checked.""
"Had they?""
Vanessa nodded.
"The mechanic told me everything was fine.""
"Did you speak with the mechanic?""
"Yes.""
"Name?""
"Michael Reed.""
Detective Miller wrote it down.
"Did you tell anyone about that visit?""
"No.""
"Did you tell James?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"No.""
I stood so abruptly that my chair scraped across the floor.
"You knew Sarah's brakes might have been tampered with, and you said nothing?""
"I didn't know they had been tampered with!""
"But you suspected it!""
"I was trying to get proof!""
"And while you were trying to get proof, Sarah died!""
Vanessa flinched.
I had never shouted at her like that before.
For once, she didn't shout back.
She simply stood there, crying.
Detective Miller closed her notebook.
"I need to verify these details independently. I'll be speaking with the garage, reviewing the original accident records, and checking the documents you mentioned.""
She looked at me.
"Mr. Carter, please don't confront anyone else connected to this case until we know more. If someone falsified your statement, we need to establish who had access to the records.""
"I understand.""
She turned toward Vanessa.
"Mrs. Carter, do not destroy, alter, or remove any documents connected to Sarah's death. If you remember anything else, contact me through my office.""
Vanessa nodded without speaking.
The detective walked to the front door, then paused.
"One more thing, Mr. Carter.""
I turned.
"The phone call you received earlier—do you still have the message?""
I showed her the screen.
She studied it carefully.
"Have you ever seen this number before?""
"No.""
She took a photograph of the screen with my permission.
Then she looked at Vanessa.
"Have you?""
Vanessa's lips parted.
For a moment, I thought she would deny it.
Instead, she whispered, "Yes.""
Detective Miller straightened.
"Whose number is it?""
Vanessa stared at the floor.
Then she said, "Daniel Whitmore's.""
The detective's expression sharpened.
"Are you certain?""
Vanessa nodded.
"I memorized it because he called me every day after Sarah died.""
"Why?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"To make sure I kept my promise.""
"What promise?"" I asked.
Her voice was barely audible.
"That I would never tell you what happened in the car.""
Before I could demand an explanation, my phone rang.
The hospital.
I answered immediately.
"Hello?""
A nurse spoke quickly.
"Mr. Carter, your daughter is awake. She's asking for you, and she's become very distressed.""
"Is she hurt?""
"She's stable, but she says someone tried to contact her while you were away.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who?""
The nurse paused.
"She says a woman came to her room and told her that her mother wasn't dead.""
I gripped the phone.
"That's impossible.""
"I know this is difficult to hear, sir, but we need you to come back. Your daughter is frightened, and we'd like you here.""
I hung up and looked at Detective Miller.
"Someone went to see Emily.""
She immediately took out her phone.
"Was this person identified?""
"The nurse didn't say.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
Her face had gone white.
"James," she whispered, "don't let Emily tell you what that woman said.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
May you like
Vanessa's eyes filled with terror.
"Because if Emily remembers the woman who visited Sarah that night, then the person who killed my first husband will know that the secret is no longer safe.""
