Chapter 8 - Caroline’s Debt

Caroline arrived at Daniel’s hotel after midnight wearing sunglasses.

At night.

Daniel knew immediately she had been crying.

He let her inside.

Grace stayed in the adjoining room but kept the door open.

Caroline removed the glasses.

There was no bruise.

No injury.

Just shame.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel did not answer.

She sat.

“I should have told you.”

“Yes.”

“Mother said the financial investigation was about protecting the company.”

“From me?”

“She said you had become unstable after Claire died.”

Daniel flinched.

Caroline saw it.

“I didn’t believe her at first.”

“But eventually?”

“She showed me documents.”

“The fake transfers.”

“I didn’t know they were fake.”

“You knew about my authentication device.”

Caroline looked down.

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“How did she get it?”

Caroline began crying.

“I took it.”

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at his sister.

“You what?”

“Two years ago.”

“Why?”

“Mother said there was a security audit. She said your old device should’ve been destroyed.”

Daniel stood.

“You went into my office?”

“You weren’t using that floor anymore.”

“And gave it to her.”

“Yes.”

Daniel walked to the window because he did not trust himself to speak.

Caroline whispered, “I didn’t know.”

“You didn’t ask.”

“No.”

“You never ask when Mother tells you something.”

“That’s not fair.”

Daniel turned.

“Lily could have died.”

Caroline’s face crumpled.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

“She is my niece!”

“Then why did you help them frame her father?”

Caroline stood.

“Because I owed Mother almost three million dollars!”

Daniel stopped.

Caroline covered her face.

The truth came out in pieces.

A failed real-estate venture.

Personal guarantees.

Loans hidden from Daniel.

A boyfriend who disappeared after persuading her to invest.

Eleanor had paid the creditors.

Then she made Caroline sign a private repayment agreement tied to her Mercer shares.

“If I crossed her,” Caroline whispered, “she could take everything.”

Daniel stared at his sister.

“You have more than enough money.”

“I know.”

“Then why hide it?”

“Because I’m a Mercer.”

The bitterness in her voice surprised him.

“We aren’t allowed to fail privately. We’re only allowed to succeed publicly.”

Daniel sat again.

For the first time, he saw not the favored younger sister he had resented for years, but another child shaped by Eleanor’s control.

It did not erase Caroline’s betrayal.

But it explained part of it.

“What else did she ask you to do?”

Caroline wiped her face.

“Vote with her. Repeat concerns about your mental state. Tell directors you were drinking.”

“I barely drink.”

“I know.”

“What else?”

“She wanted me to petition the trust court if you were indicted.”

Daniel froze.

“On what grounds?”

“That you were unsuitable to serve as Lily’s trustee.”

There it was.

The full architecture.

Frame Daniel financially.

Remove him as CEO.

Have him declared unsuitable as trustee.

Then when Lily turned four, someone else would control her shares.

Unless Lily did not live that long.

Daniel felt sick.

“Who would replace me as trustee?”

Caroline hesitated.

“Mother.”

Grace stepped into the room.

“We need this in a sworn statement.”

Caroline looked frightened.

“If I testify, she’ll destroy me.”

Daniel replied, “She already has.”

Caroline stared at him.

Then her phone rang.

MOTHER.

All three looked at the screen.

Grace said, “Answer. Speakerphone. Do not provoke her.”

Caroline answered.

“Hello?”

Eleanor’s voice was calm.

“You are with Daniel.”

Caroline went pale.

“How do you—”

“Don’t insult me.”

Caroline looked at Daniel.

Eleanor continued.

“You made an emotional mistake at the board meeting. I am willing to forgive it.”

Caroline’s jaw trembled.

“What do you want?”

“I want you home.”

“No.”

Silence.

Then Eleanor said, “Your brother cannot save you from the note you signed.”

Caroline closed her eyes.

Daniel took a step forward but Grace stopped him.

Eleanor continued.

“And remind Daniel that Claire tried this too.”

Daniel’s blood went cold.

Caroline looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

Eleanor gave a soft laugh.

“Ask him why his wife kept secrets from him.”

Daniel spoke before Grace could stop him.

“You knew Claire was investigating you.”

Eleanor became silent.

Then:

“Yes.”

Daniel’s heart hammered.

“And?”

“She was clever.”

“What did you do to her?”

“Nothing.”

The answer came instantly.

Too instantly, Daniel thought.

But then Eleanor added:

“I didn’t need to. She was dying.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

Grace grabbed his arm.

Eleanor’s voice remained controlled.

“You should consider what Claire eventually understood.”

“What was that?”

“That the Mercer family survives only because someone is willing to do what gentler people cannot.”

The call ended.

Caroline whispered, “She admitted she knew.”

Grace was already saving the recording.

Daniel looked at the dark screen.

“No.”

He thought of Claire’s letter.

The trust.

The audit.

The missing ledger.

“She admitted something else.”

May you like

“What?”

“She thinks everything she did was necessary.”
