Chapter 10 - Siege of the Blackwood Estate

The return journey to the Blackwood estate was a frantic race against the ticking clock of annihilation.
Alessio drove the lead armored vehicle himself, hurtling over the icy asphalt at breakneck speeds while the blizzard raged around them.
Lucas lay wrapped in thermal blankets in the back seat, clutching his sister's hand while Saraphina cleaned his wounds with antiseptic wipes.
Every few seconds, Saraphina looked at Alessio’s profile in the dim dashboard light, witnessing the silent, volcanic rage boiling beneath his disciplined skin.
When the convoy crested the final mountain ridge, the nightmare Dante had promised painted the night sky in sickening shades of crimson and orange.
The western wing of the historic Blackwood estate was engulfed in roaring flames that pierced the snowstorm.
Automatic gunfire echoed across the valley, sharp and relentless, signaling that the loyal house guards were making their final stand.
The iron perimeter gates had been blown inward with military-grade explosives, leaving twisted black metal smoking in the snow.
"Lucas, stay down in the footwell and do not move until I come back for you," Saraphina ordered, her voice trembling but resolute.
"Sara, don't leave me," the boy pleaded, his eyes wide with renewed terror.
"I have to help him finish this, Lucas," she replied, pressing a soft kiss to his bruised forehead.
"If we don't end this tonight, neither of us will ever have a life to return to."
She pulled the light utility pistol Alessio had given her from her pocket, checking the chamber just as he had instructed during their brief training hours.
Alessio turned to her, his hazel eyes burning with fierce emotion as he pulled her face toward his with a single, gloved hand.
"If we enter those doors, Saraphina, there is no retreating," he whispered, his thumb brushing against her cheek.
"I stopped retreating the moment I walked up your driveway at two in the morning," she answered without hesitation.
Alessio nodded, kicking his door open and stepping out into the freezing firefight with his rifle raised.
They breached the grand foyer through a side terrace, stepping into a hellscape of shattered marble, drifting soot, and acrid smoke.
Two Moretti mercs patrolling the conservatory were neutralized before they could turn their barrels toward the doorway.
The grand staircase was slick with melting snow and debris, the magnificent ceiling fresco of angels now blackened by rising flames.
From the mezzanine above, the sound of boots scraping against gravel heralded the arrival of the cartel's inner guard.
Senator Marcus Vance stood on the second-floor gallery, surrounded by four heavily armed mercenaries, clutching a metal briefcase packed with Romano bearer bonds.
Beside him stood the elder boss, Don Carmine Moretti, an old man with dead eyes and a bespoke cashmere coat draped over his shoulders.
"You're too late, boy," Moretti shouted down into the smoke-filled hall, his raspy voice dripping with triumph.
"The Romano dynasty burns tonight, and Louisville belongs to those who know how to do real business."
"You forgot one detail, Moretti," Alessio called back, stepping boldly into the center of the burning hall, completely exposing himself to draw their fire.
"You brought your entire empire into my living room, but you forgot that every brick in this house was built to withstand an invasion."
Alessio pressed a concealed button beneath the carved oak banister, activating the mansion's emergency fire shutters.
Massive steel plates slammed down over every exterior exit and window with deafening, mechanical thuds, sealing every soul inside the burning sanctuary.
The Moretti mercenaries panicked, their confident sneers melting into abject terror as they realized they were trapped in an enclosed furnace.
Gunfire erupted from both levels, rounds ricocheting wildly off the reinforced steel and shattering the remaining mirrors into thousands of crystalline fragments.

Saraphina darted behind a massive marble column, her heart hammering against her ribs, raising her weapon to cover Alessio's blind spot as three enforcers charged the stairs.
The war for Kentucky's underworld had reached its bloody, claustrophobic climax, and only one bloodline would walk out through the ashes alive.
