Chapter 12 - A Theft That Never HappenedThe police officer arrived at Claire's apartment on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

She had been washing dishes when someone knocked.

Through the peephole, she saw two uniformed officers standing in the hallway.

Her heart dropped.

"Ms. Bennett?" one asked when she opened the door.

"Yes."

"We'd like to ask you some questions about a report filed by the Mercer household."

Claire stepped back.

"What report?"

"A missing piece of jewelry."

The officer explained that Vivian Mercer had reported a diamond brooch missing from her dressing room.

According to Vivian, Claire had been seen near the room shortly before her dismissal.

Claire stared at him.

"She thinks I stole it?"

"The report identifies you as someone who had access to the area. We're gathering information."

"I didn't take anything."

"We're not making an accusation at this point."

Claire immediately asked whether she could contact her attorney.

The officers agreed.

Naomi joined by telephone and arranged a formal interview rather than allowing a confused conversation in Claire's doorway to become something else.

When the officers left, Claire sat on the kitchen floor.

She had expected Vivian to attack her reputation.

But watching police officers walk up to her apartment made the threat real.

Within an hour, Naomi had requested preservation of the household's jewelry inventories, access logs, photographs, and relevant security footage.

"Vivian can make a report," Naomi told Claire, "but a report isn't proof."

Claire wiped her face.

"What if she puts something in my locker?"

"Your locker has already been emptied. Any supposed discovery would need to be examined carefully. We document everything."

"But people will believe her."

"Some might."

Naomi paused.

"Our job is to make sure the evidence matters more than assumptions."

At Bellwether, Daniel learned of the jewelry allegation over dinner.

He placed his fork on the table.

"You reported Claire to the police?"

Vivian looked up.

"A brooch is missing."

"Which brooch?"

"The antique diamond one."

"The one you wore to the Whitmore fundraiser?"

"Yes."

Daniel frowned.

"That was after Claire left."

Vivian froze.

"What?"

"The fundraiser was Monday night. Claire was dismissed Saturday."

Vivian recovered quickly.

"I wore a different brooch."

Daniel studied her.

"They looked identical?"

"Daniel, honestly. Do you memorize all my jewelry?"

"No."

He stood.

"But I remember that one because it belonged to my grandmother."

Vivian folded her napkin.

"Are you accusing me of inventing a theft?"

"I'm asking when you last saw it."

"I don't remember."

"Then why did you name Claire?"

"Because she's trying to destroy this family."

Daniel stared at her.

The answer was revealing.

Vivian had not said Claire was suspected because of evidence.

She had said Claire was dangerous.

"Show me the jewelry box."

Vivian rose.

"Absolutely not."

Daniel's voice remained calm.

"Then stop accusing a woman without knowing whether anything was stolen."

Vivian's face reddened.

"You are choosing the maid over your wife."

"No. I'm choosing not to accuse someone without proof."

"That's not how you behaved at the pool."

The words struck him harder than she intended.

Daniel stood motionless.

Vivian realized she had made a mistake.

But she pressed forward.

"You believed she was responsible then."

"I was wrong to hit her."

"You were protecting Lily."

"I was protecting no one when I struck her."

For a moment, Vivian looked almost frightened.

Then the familiar contempt returned.

"Claire has poisoned you against me."

Daniel shook his head.

"No. Your actions are doing that."

He left the dining room.

Vivian remained seated long after the food went cold.

Later that evening, she entered her dressing room and opened the hidden compartment beneath her jewelry drawer.

The diamond brooch lay inside.

She picked it up.

For the first time, her hands were shaking.

She had planned to place it among some items supposedly recovered from Claire's belongings.

But Daniel's unexpected memory had made that dangerous.

She wrapped the brooch in tissue and locked it away again.

Then she deleted a draft message to Graham.

The theft report will make Claire look unreliable.

What Vivian did not know was that the housekeeper had photographed her jewelry at Vivian's request before the Whitmore fundraiser.

The photograph showed the diamond brooch pinned to the gown.

It also contained the phone's original date and time.

And Mrs. Finch, who had spent years remaining silent, had quietly sent that photograph to Evelyn.

The next morning, Evelyn called Daniel.

"Your wife is lying about the brooch."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Do you have proof?"

"Yes."

"And you're certain?"

Evelyn's answer was quiet.

"Daniel, I think your wife is becoming desperate."

May you like

She paused.

"And desperate people sometimes do terrible things to protect the first terrible thing they did."
