Chapter 9 - The True Alliance

The small black detonator in Elena’s hand commanded the entire room.

Vincent’s men lowered their rifles, looking nervously at their boss. “What is this, Dominic?” Vincent hissed, his confidence finally cracking.

“It’s the end of a thirty-year war,” Dominic said calmly.

He walked over to me and gently pushed my head down, shielding Leo and me with his own body.

Elena looked at Jack, tears finally spilling from her eyes. “I’m sorry, Jack. I couldn't tell you. If Vincent knew I was alive, he would have killed Leo.”

“I don't understand,” Jack choked out, clutching his bleeding shoulder.

“Two years ago, when you were giving birth, Vincent ordered his men to kill you and take the child,” Dominic explained, his voice cold and precise. “I had an inside man at the warehouse. He swapped you out with a Jane Doe and smuggled you to one of my safe houses. I let Vincent believe he had the leverage.”

“Why?” I asked, staring at my husband. “Why didn't you just tell Jack?”

“Because Jack had already defected,” Dominic said, looking down at our son with a mixture of anger and sorrow. “If Jack knew Elena was alive, he would have come for her. Vincent would have followed. I needed Vincent to believe he controlled Jack, so Jack could get close enough to find the ledger.”

My husband hadn't been acting out of pure cruelty. He had been playing a four-year game of chess, using his own family as pawns to dismantle the Rossi syndicate.

“You’re bluffing,” Vincent spat, pointing his gun at Elena. “There are no explosives in this house.”

“Not in the house,” Elena said coldly. “In the ledger.”

Vincent froze. He looked down at the heavy leather book in his hand.

“When Jack threw it on the floor, I activated the magnetic seal from upstairs,” Elena said. “If you drop it, or open it, it blows. It has enough C4 packed into the binding to take out this entire room.”

Vincent’s face went completely white. His hands trembled as he held the book perfectly still.

The police sirens were deafening now. Red and blue lights flashed through the shattered windows.

“The police are here, Vincent,” Dominic said, stepping forward. “You have a choice. You can blow us all to hell, or you can drop your weapons, let my family walk out, and take your chances with the feds.”

Vincent looked at the ledger. He looked at his men. Slowly, the Rossi boss lowered his gun. His men followed suit.

“Take them,” Dominic barked at his own security detail, who had finally flooded the room from the back entrances.

Dominic knelt beside Jack. He ripped off his tie and pressed it hard against Jack’s shoulder wound. “I’m sorry I broke you, son,” Dominic whispered, his voice finally breaking. “I’m sorry.”

Jack looked at his father, then at Elena, who was running across the room to scoop Leo into her arms. Jack reached up and gripped his father’s hand. “We’re even, old man.”

The police swarmed the house. Paramedics rushed in, loading Sophia and Jack onto stretchers. Vincent was led away in handcuffs, still delicately holding the explosive ledger until the bomb squad arrived.

I stood in the driveway, the cold air rushing over me. I held Dominic’s hand. Elena stood beside us, holding Leo tight.

My family was battered, bleeding, and surrounded by sirens. But as Leo reached out and grabbed my finger, I knew we had survived.

The lies were burned away. The truth was out. We were finally a family.
