Chapter 8 - Return to the Sanctuary

The hospital was quiet when I returned,
the chaotic energy of the daytime shift having faded into the hushed,
somber atmosphere of the night.
I walked down the long,
sterile corridors,
my boots making soft thuds against the linoleum,
my heart heavy but entirely resolute.
The police officer stationed outside Meadow's door nodded respectfully as I approached,
stepping aside to let me enter the room.
The lights were dimmed,
casting soft,
gentle shadows across the walls,
and the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound in the room.
Meadow was sleeping,
her small chest rising and falling in a steady,
peaceful rhythm,
her blonde hair spread across the white pillowcase like a halo.
I pulled the chair up to the side of the bed,
sitting down slowly,
careful not to make a sound that might wake her.
I reached into my bag,
pulling out the stuffed triceratops,
General Pickles,
that I had retrieved from the house before the police had sealed it off as a crime scene.
I tucked the green,
worn dinosaur gently under her uninjured arm,
making sure it was nestled closely against her side.
Her eyes fluttered open,
heavy with medication,
but a weak,
beautiful smile spread across her bruised face when she saw the toy.
"General Pickles,"
she whispered,
her voice raspy,
tired,
but filled with a profound relief.
"He came to protect you,
sweetheart,"
I said,
leaning forward to kiss her forehead,
my lips lingering on her warm skin.
"And I am here,
too,
and I am never leaving your side."
Meadow looked at me,
her blue eyes searching my face,
looking for reassurance,
looking for safety.
"Is Daddy going to be mad?"
she asked,
the fear returning to her voice,
a small tremor shaking her chin.
"Daddy is never going to come near you again,"
I promised,
my voice carrying the absolute certainty of a sacred vow.
"The police came,
Meadow,
and they took him away because he did a very bad thing by hurting you."
She blinked,
processing the information,
her young mind trying to understand the massive shift in her reality.
"Is he in jail?"
she asked,
her eyes widening slightly.
"Yes,
baby,
he is,"
I replied,
smoothing her hair back from her face,
my touch gentle,
soothing,
and full of unconditional love.
"And Aunt Serena?"
she asked,
a tear escaping the corner of her eye,
rolling down into her ear.
"Aunt Serena is gone,
too,"
I said,
my voice hardening just a fraction at the mention of my sister's name.
"They are both gone,
and they can never hurt us again,
I made sure of it."
Meadow let out a long,
shaky sigh,
her body relaxing deeper into the mattress,
the tension finally leaving her small frame.
"You're a superhero,
Mom,"
she whispered,
her eyes closing as the medication pulled her back toward sleep.
"No,
sweetheart,"
I whispered back,
holding her hand,
watching her chest rise and fall,
"I'm just a mother."
I sat there for the rest of the night,
standing guard over my child,
May you like
a sentinel in the darkness,
ready to destroy anything or anyone that tried to bring harm to her ever again.
