Chapter 8 - The Silk Wire Trail

The safehouse in Jersey City was a converted three-story brick warehouse standing directly on the edge of the Hudson River,

offering an unobstructed view of the Manhattan skyline across the water.

Inside,

the ground floor had been transformed into a temporary command post,

equipped with tactical radio monitors,

satellite communication dishes,

and several medical cots.

Dr. Miller,

a trusted physician who had served the Falcone family for over twenty years,

was carefully examining Don Moretti's right knee under a bright surgical lamp.

Gabriel stood near the window,

a fresh bandage neatly wrapped around his shoulder,

staring across the river at the distant city lights.

"Did you find anything on the mercenary's gear,

Elena?"

Gabriel asked without turning around.

I sat at a long stainless steel workbench in the corner of the room,

adjusting the focus on a portable digital compound microscope.

Positioned on the stage was a piece of dark fabric I had cut from the sleeve of one of the fallen attackers at the Gotham Club.

"This wasn't standard military tactical gear,

Mr. Falcone,"

I said,

peering through the eyepieces.

"The fabric is a high-density liquid-crystal polymer,"

"coated with a microscopic layer of water-repellent fluoropolymer."

"There is only one firm in the country with the patent for this material,"

I continued,

bringing up a chemical structure diagram on my laptop screen.

"Aetheria Bio-Tech,"

"a private medical research corporation based out of Cambridge,

Massachusetts."

Carmine stepped over to the bench,

holding a mug of black coffee in his hand.

"Aetheria Bio-Tech?"

Carmine repeated,

his eyebrows knitting together in thought.

"That company is owned by Dr. Vance Sterling,"

Carmine said,

his voice dropping into a dangerous register.

"Sterling is a billionaire pharmaceutical executive who sits on the board of three major hospital networks in New York and New Jersey."

"And he was Marco's primary financial backer,"

I added,

opening the Paterson ledger and pointing to a list of wire transfers.

"Look at these transactions,"

I demonstrated.

"Over the last fourteen months,"

"Marco transferred over twelve million dollars from the Newark port accounts to a dummy corporation registered to Vance Sterling."

Don Moretti let out a sharp,

painful groan from the medical cot as Dr. Miller carefully extracted a small piece of black thread from his knee surgical scar.

Dr. Miller dropped the thread into a glass jar with a pair of tweezers,

his face dark with quiet horror.

"It's the same material,

Gabriel,"

Dr. Miller announced,

holding the jar up to the fluorescent light.

"Twelve-ply braided cord,"

"impregnated with organophosphate toxin."

"If we hadn't opened this scar tonight,"

"Don Moretti would have suffered a total organ shutdown within forty-eight hours."

Don Moretti sat up on the cot,

his hands shaking with a mixture of terror and absolute rage.

"Sterling was going to murder us all,"

Moretti rasped out,

his voice trembling.

"He was using Marco to poison the leadership of every family,"

"so his corporate syndicate could take total control of the docks,"

"the waste management,"

"and the medical supply contracts across the entire eastern region."

Gabriel turned away from the window,

his eyes burning with a cold,

relentless fire.

"Sterling made a fatal calculation,"

Gabriel said softly.

"He thought he was playing a game against street thugs who only knew how to use guns."

He walked over to my worktable,

placing his hand on the edge of the microscope stage.

"He didn't realize we had someone who could trace his poison back to his front door."

"Elena,"

Gabriel asked,

looking down at me,

"where is Sterling storing the rest of this suture shipment?"

I typed a quick series of commands into the port tracking database on my laptop,

cross-referencing the container manifest numbers from the Paterson ledger.

"Container 8849-B,"

I revealed,

pointing to the flashing red icon on the digital map.

"It arrived at Berth 14 in the Port of Newark four hours ago,"

"disguised as an offshore delivery of advanced MRI diagnostic equipment."

"It's scheduled to be loaded onto regional delivery trucks at sunrise tomorrow morning."

Gabriel looked over at Carmine,

a dark,

unforgiving smile spreading across his face.

"Assemble the heavy team,

Carmine,"

May you like

Gabriel commanded clearly.

"We are going to the docks."
