Chapter 16 - The Edge of the Abyss

The luxury hotel room in downtown Austin felt like a gilded cage,
the walls closing in on Marcus Reynolds with every passing second,
every tick of the clock sounding like a hammer against his soul.
He sat in the darkness,
the only light coming from the city skyline through the glass,
the very city that now belonged to the woman he had discarded.
He poured another glass of expensive scotch,
the liquid amber glowing in the dim light,
but it tasted like ash in his mouth.
He was a man who had built his entire identity on being a winner,
on being the heir to a fortune that stretched back generations,
and now he was watching it all dissolve into the Texas night.
His lawyers had stopped answering his frantic,
late-night calls,
leaving him with nothing but the silence of his own mistakes.
The board of Reynolds Holdings had officially moved to strip him of his title,
citing "irreparable moral turpitude" in their legal filings.
They didn't care about the children,
he knew that,
they only cared about the share prices that were plummeting like a lead weight.
But Marcus didn't see himself as the villain of the story,
instead,
he saw himself as a victim of a grand,
calculated conspiracy.
He stared at a photo of Kesha on his phone,
her face cold and regal on the cover of a business magazine,
and he felt a burning,
uncontrollable rage.
"She planned this,"
he whispered to the empty room,
his voice cracking with a mixture of grief and madness.
"She waited eight years just to see me crawl."
He began to pace the room,
his shadows stretching long and distorted across the carpet.
He thought about the quadruplets,
those four little lives that were walking proof of his failure.
He didn't see them as children anymore,
he saw them as weapons that Kesha was using to destroy him.
If he could just get to them,
he thought,
if he could just talk to them without her there,
he could convince them.
He could tell them that their mother was the one who kept them away,
the one who lied to them about their father’s love.
He reached for his laptop,
his fingers trembling as he opened a folder of surveillance photos.
He had spent thousands of dollars on private investigators,
tracking every movement of the Vance family.
He knew their schedule,
he knew their favorite park,
and he knew the name of the school they attended.
His mind,
fractured by the loss of his status and the sting of public humiliation,
began to form a desperate,
dangerous plan.
He wouldn't wait for the next court date,
he wouldn't wait for the judge to rule on his character.
He would take what was "his,"
even if he had to tear the world down to reach it.
He picked up his phone and dialed a number that wasn't in his contact list,
a number for a man who did the kind of work the Reynolds family usually avoided.
"I need a distraction,"
Marcus said into the receiver,
his eyes fixed on the lights of the Vance Corp tower.
"Something big,
something that will draw the security away from the school for ten minutes."
He listened to the voice on the other end,
a cold smile finally touching his lips.
He was at the edge of the abyss,
May you like
and he was ready to jump,
convinced that the only way to save his legacy was to steal it back from the woman who had made it.
