Chapter 11 - The Cracks in the Golden Cage

The air inside the penthouse felt heavy,

thick with the scent of expensive lilies and the metallic tang of unspoken fear.

Michael Lane stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows,

his reflection ghostly against the backdrop of the Boston skyline.

He looked at his hands,

the hands that had signed away Evelyn’s life,

the hands that were now trembling with a rhythmic,

uncontrollable pulse.

The Davenport bid was bleeding.

The rumors were spreading through the financial district like a brushfire,

hot and impossible to contain.

"They’re calling for an audit,

Michael,"

Rachel said,

her voice cutting through the silence from the doorway.

She was still wearing her yoga clothes,

but the calm of the studio had been replaced by a jagged,

frenetic energy.

Her face,

usually so carefully composed,

looked tight,

the skin pulled too thin over her cheekbones.

"The selection committee received an anonymous tip,"

she continued,

stepping into the room.

"They found the secondary server."

"They found the memos about the structural shortcuts."

Michael turned,

his eyes bloodshot and wild.

"How?"

he roared,

the sound echoing off the marble floors.

"That server was encrypted."

"Only three people had the access codes."

"Me,"

"the Lead Architect,"

"and you."

Rachel flinched,

but she didn't back down.

"Are you accusing me?"

she whispered,

her voice trembling with a mix of hurt and calculated anger.

"After everything I’ve done?"

"After I stood by you while the whole world called you a traitor?"

"After I helped you rebuild after that woman tried to kill us?"

Michael stepped toward her,

his shadow looming large on the wall.

"Evelyn is out,

Rachel."

"I saw her."

"She was at the gala."

"She was in the hotel."

"She talked to me."

Rachel’s breath hitched,

her hand flying to her throat.

"She talked to you?"

"What did she say?"

"She said the three years are up,"

Michael hissed,

grabbing Rachel’s shoulders.

"She said she’s coming for everything."

"And now the Davenport deal is falling apart."

"The investors are pulling out."

"The board is asking questions I can’t answer."

Rachel looked up at him,

and for the first time,

the mask of the 'perfect wife' slipped.

She saw the coward beneath the suit.

She saw the man who would sacrifice anyone to save his own skin.

She remembered what Evelyn had said in the yoga studio.

He’ll use you as a life raft.

"We need to call the police,"

Rachel said,

trying to regain her composure.

"She’s stalking us."

"She’s violating her parole."

"She can’t violate her parole if we can’t prove it’s her,"

Michael snapped,

releasing her.

"She’s smart,

Rachel."

"She was always smarter than both of us."

"She’s using proxies."

"She’s using Julian Vance."

Rachel’s eyes narrowed.

"Julian?"

"The rival?"

"Why would he help a convicted felon?"

"Because he wants the company,"

Michael said,

pacing the room like a caged animal.

"And because he knows Evelyn is the only one who can tear it down."

He looked at the liquor cabinet,

his hand reaching for the crystal decanter of scotch.

It was only ten in the morning.

The golden cage was still beautiful,

but the bars were starting to glow red with the heat of the approaching fire.

And in the distance,

across the harbor,

the lights of the city seemed to flicker like the eyes of a thousand watchers.

I was one of them.

I was sitting in the dark of the Beacon Hill townhouse,

the glow of the laptop the only light in the room.

I was watching the Lane Group stock price.

It was a slow,

delicious slide into the abyss.

"Every empire falls from within,"

May you like

I whispered to the empty room.

"I just provided the gravity."
