Chapter 17 - The Final Severance

The morning after the dramatic,

sweeping police raid broke bright and clear,

the Texas sun casting warm,

golden rays across the damaged,

glass-strewn floor of my living room.

Mr. Harrison arrived at the house precisely at eight,

carrying a thick,

leather briefcase and two steaming cups of expensive,

dark roast coffee,

looking incredibly satisfied with the chaotic,

successful events of the previous night.

We sat at the kitchen island,

carefully avoiding the areas where the crime scene technicians had dusted for fingerprints,

as the lawyer laid out the complete,

devastating legal fallout that was about to rain down upon Jason and his accomplices.

"Victor Thorne and his associates are facing decades in federal prison for extortion,

racketeering,

and attempted murder,"

Mr. Harrison explained,

taking a slow,

calm sip of his coffee.

"And because Jason was entirely complicit in their financial schemes,

and actively attempted to defraud you to pay them off,

the district attorney is throwing the absolute maximum sentence at him."

I nodded slowly,

tracing the rim of my coffee cup with a steady,

unshaking finger,

processing the sheer magnitude of the victory we had achieved.

"He asked me to save him last night,

Mr. Harrison,"

I whispered,

a bitter,

humorless smile playing on my lips.

"After everything he did,

after trying to steal my home and my savings,

he actually believed I would stand up for him."

"Narcissists always believe they are the victims of their own terrible choices,

Rachel,"

Mr. Harrison noted,

closing his thick,

legal folder with a definitive,

satisfying snap.

"But you do not have to worry about his delusions anymore,

because the judge officially signed the final,

expedited divorce decree this morning,

meaning you are completely,

legally free from Jason Miller."

A massive,

suffocating weight lifted instantly from my chest,

allowing me to take the first,

truly deep breath I had managed since that fateful,

shattering wedding night.

I was no longer tied to his debts,

no longer tied to his lies,

and the beautiful,

brick house that I had poured my heart and soul into was now solely,

undisputedly mine.

Later that afternoon,

as a team of local glass repairmen worked diligently to replace the shattered patio doors,

my cell phone buzzed with an incoming call from an unknown,

restricted number.

I answered cautiously,

half expecting it to be another desperate,

pathetic plea from one of Jason's associates,

but instead,

I heard the trembling,

hesitant voice of Amber Collins.

"Rachel,

please do not hang up,

I just saw the news about the police raid,

and I need to know if you are okay,"

she rambled,

her voice thick with unshed,

manipulative tears.

I closed my eyes,

pinching the bridge of my nose,

exhausted by the sheer,

relentless audacity of the people who had tried to ruin me.

"I am perfectly fine,

Amber,

and I am very busy rebuilding the life you tried to steal,"

I replied coldly,

my tone offering absolutely no comfort,

no forgiveness,

and no bridge back to our past friendship.

"I have nothing left,

Rachel,

Jason ruined me too,

I cannot find a job,

I cannot pay my rent,

I just thought maybe,

for the sake of the girls we used to be,

you could help me,"

she begged,

playing her final,

pathetic card.

"The girl you used to be died the moment you crawled into my guest bed on my wedding night,

Amber,"

I stated firmly,

my voice devoid of any pity.

"Do not ever call this number again,

because the next time you try to contact me,

Mr. Harrison will file a permanent harassment restraining order against you."

I ended the call,

blocking the number immediately,

and permanently deleting her contact information from my digital life,

May you like

finally severing the very last,

toxic thread connecting me to my painful past.
