Chapter 11 - The Dragon and the Lion

The rain in Chinatown didn't fall,

it drifted,

a heavy,

gray mist that clung to the neon signs and turned the cobblestones into mirrors.

I walked down Mott Street,

my hands buried deep in the pockets of my overcoat,

feeling the cold weight of the metal pressed against my hip.

Every shadow felt like a threat,

every flickering light a potential sniper's nest.

I was in the heart of territory that had been forbidden to my family for a generation,

walking into the mouth of the dragon with nothing but a promise and a prayer.

I reached the old tea house,

its red door peeling and faded,

looking like a relic of a forgotten era.

Two men stood outside,

their faces obscured by the brims of their hats,

their hands tucked into their sleeves.

They didn't move as I approached,

but I felt their eyes scanning me,

looking for the bulge of a wire or the twitch of a nervous hand.

"Moretti,"

one of them grunted,

his voice like grinding stones.

"Chen is waiting."

I stepped inside,

and the smell of jasmine and old wood hit me,

thick and suffocating.

The room was dimly lit,

the only sound the rhythmic bubbling of a tea kettle in the corner.

Chen sat at a low table in the center of the room,

his back straight,

his long fingers wrapped around a delicate porcelain cup.

He didn't look up as I sat across from him,

his eyes fixed on the steam rising from his tea.

"You look tired, Calder,"

he said,

his English perfect,

his tone devoid of emotion.

"The world is a tiring place, Chen,"

I replied,

resting my hands on the table where he could see them.

"Especially when the people who are supposed to lead it decide to burn it down."

Chen finally looked at me,

his eyes dark and bottomless,

reflecting the wisdom of a man who had survived a thousand wars.

"The High Council has reached out to me as well,"

he said,

taking a slow sip of his tea.

"They offered me your docks,"

"your shipping routes,"

"and a seat at their table."

"And what did you tell them?"

I asked,

my heart hammering against my ribs.

"I told them I would think about it,"

he said,

a thin smile touching his lips.

"Because a wise man never refuses a gift before he knows the price."

"The price is your soul, Chen,"

I said,

leaning forward.

"They don't want partners,"

"they want vassals."

"They want to turn this city into a factory of misery,"

"and they’ll discard you the moment you’re no longer useful."

"I have the ledger,"

I continued,

dropping the bombshell into the quiet room.

"I know about the offshore accounts in Macau,"

"I know about the shipments moving through the Golden Triangle that they’ve been hiding from you."

Chen’s hand paused,

the cup halfway to his mouth.

"They are stealing from the Triads?"

he asked,

his voice dropping to a whisper.

"They aren't just stealing,"

I said,

"they’re replacing you."

"They’ve been building their own networks right under your nose,"

"using your men and your routes to line their own pockets."

I pulled a single sheet of paper from my pocket—

a photocopy of a page from the ledger—

and slid it across the table.

Chen read it slowly,

his expression hardening into a mask of ice.

The names on that list were his own lieutenants,

men he had trusted for years,

now revealed as puppets of the High Council.

"This is a dangerous game you’re playing, Moretti,"

Chen said,

his voice trembling with a suppressed rage.

"If this is a lie, I will peel the skin from your bones myself."

"If it was a lie, I wouldn't be here alone,"

I replied.

"I’m not asking for your friendship, Chen."

"I’m asking for a temporary alliance."

"We combine our strength,"

"we hit them where it hurts,"

"and we take back what belongs to us."

Chen looked at the paper for a long time,

the silence in the room growing heavy enough to crush a man.

Finally,

he looked up and extended his hand.

"The Dragon and the Lion,"

he said.

"Let them see what happens when the predators stop fighting each other and start hunting the hunters."

I shook his hand,

knowing that I had just made a pact with a devil,

May you like

but in this world,

sometimes the devil is the only friend you have.
