Chapter 13 - The International Stakes

Two years passed,

bringing fresh seasons of growth,

prosperity,

and unprecedented international acclaim to the Sinclair Sanctuary.

The historic land patent recovered from Richard’s archives had been legally recorded,

restoring four thousand acres of pristine mountain pastures to Walt and Ruth’s ownership.

Juniper’s son,

Valor,

had grown into a breathtaking mahogany bay stallion with immense muscle,

flawless gait,

and an intelligence that mirrored his mother's legendary spirit.

Under my daily training,

Valor had won every major regional reining futurity in North America,

earning an official nomination to represent the United States at the World Equestrian Gold Cup in Lexington,

Kentucky.

This was the highest honor in the performance-horse world,

a global championship featuring the elite bloodlines of Europe,

South America,

and the Middle East.

Caleb and Hannah,

now eleven years old,

had become skilled young riders themselves,

helping me manage Valor’s daily care and warm-up routines.

We arrived at the prestigious Kentucky Horse Park in early October,

the sprawling grounds filled with polished white fences,

grand arenas,

and foreign flags fluttering in the crisp autumn breeze.

However,

glory at the highest international level always attracts envy and dangerous rivals.

On the evening before the preliminary championship round,

a sleek silver limousine pulled up outside our private stable barn.

Out stepped Baron von Roth,

a wealthy European aristocratic breeder known for his ruthless dominance in international horse racing and his cold,

arrogant demeanor.

He walked into our barn wearing a tailored tweed coat,

holding a gold-tipped cane,

flanked by two imposing German handlers.

"Mrs. Bethany Vance,"

Baron von Roth said,

his accent thick and icy as he looked over Valor resting in his stall.

"I have examined your stallion's genetic pedigree records."

"A mare with a crooked leg should never have been allowed into the international studbook,"

he sneered,

tapping his cane against the wooden door.

"It is a stain on the purity of elite equestrian sport."

I stepped forward,

placing myself calmly between the Baron and Valor’s stall,

looking into his cold eyes with absolute confidence.

"That crooked mare built a hundred-million-dollar legacy,

Baron,"

I replied smoothly.

"And her son is going to beat your bloodlines on the dirt tomorrow."

Von Roth chuckled dryly,

a sinister smile touching his lips.

"We shall see,

my dear,"

he whispered.

"The international testing committee has strict standards."

"It would be a terrible shame if your stallion failed his pre-competition blood screening tonight."

An hour after von Roth left,

the official competition veterinary team arrived at our barn,

demanding an immediate,

unannounced blood sample from Valor.

Leading the testing team was Dr. Sterling Vance—a distant,

corrupt cousin of Marcus Sterling who had somehow retained his position on the European athletic committee.

"We received an anonymous tip,"

Dr. Sterling announced coldly,

pulling a glass syringe from his leather case.

"Claims have been made that your stallion was injected with illegal performance-enhancing peptides."

Walt took a step forward,

his fists clenched tightly,

sensing a trap.

"That horse has never had anything but oats,

clean water,

and fresh hay!"

Walt roared.

"You're trying to frame us!"

I held up my hand,

stopping Walt,

and looked directly at Dr. Sterling.

"You may draw the blood sample,"

I said,

my voice completely calm.

"On one condition."

I pulled my cell phone from my pocket,

initiating a live video stream connected directly to the World Equestrian Federation’s official legal board and Pat’s office.

"Every second of this blood extraction will be recorded live,

sealed in dual tamper-proof vials,

and verified by an independent third-party laboratory in London,"

I declared.

"If your lab attempts to tamper with the sample,

Dr. Sterling,

you will be joining Marcus Sterling in federal court before midnight."

Dr. Sterling’s hand began to shake slightly,

his face turning pale as he looked at the live streaming camera and realized he could not execute von Roth’s sabotage plan without being caught instantly.

He hurriedly drew the sample,

sealed the vials according to strict international protocol,

and left the barn without uttering another word.

The next morning,

the independent laboratory cleared Valor with a hundred percent clean record,

exposing von Roth’s fraudulent accusation to the international press.

When the loud speakers announced our entry into the main arena before forty thousand screaming fans,

I led Valor onto the dirt track,

his mahogany coat shining like silk under the stadium lights.

Caleb and Hannah stood near the gate,

holding the hand-stitched blue-star quilt that Ruth had wrapped them in ten years ago.

I mounted Valor,

took the leather reins in my hands,

and looked up at the vast blue Kentucky sky,

feeling Daniel’s presence in the quiet wind.

"Let's show the world what we are made of,

boy,"

I whispered.

Valor surged forward with breathtaking speed,

executing flawless spins,

sliding stops,

and powerful maneuvers that left the international judges in absolute awe.

When the final scores were displayed on the giant screen,

Valor had achieved the highest score in the sixty-year history of the World Gold Cup.

The stadium erupted into a deafening roar as the gold championship ribbon was pinned to Valor’s bridle,

and the Sinclair name was crowned supreme before the entire world.
