Chapter 14 - The Judas Kiss and the Girl with the Syringe

In the holding cell of the local precinct,

Elena Vance was beginning to realize that her role in the drama was far from over.

The news of Warren’s death had reached her,

and she felt a strange,

hollow numbness.

She had been prepared to kill for him,

and now he was gone,

leaving her to face the consequences alone.

But Warren had left her one final instruction,

a letter hidden in the apartment he had bought her.

“In the event of my passing,”

the letter had said,

“tell them about the box in the hospital basement.”

Elena knew what was in the box.

It wasn't drugs.

It was leverage.

She signaled the guard and asked for her lawyer.

“I have information,”

she told the attorney when he arrived.

“Information that will change everything about the Prescott case.”

She told him about the box,

and the secret it contained.

Warren had been recording his conversations with Charles for decades.

Every dinner,

every drink,

every confession made under the influence of the sedatives Warren had slipped into their wine.

“He has Charles on tape,”

Elena whispered.

“Admitting to things he didn't do,

but thinks he did.

Confessions of medical errors,

of negligence,

all manufactured by Warren’s questions.”

The lawyer’s eyes lit up.

This was the key to a massive civil suit,

or a devastating criminal defense.

But Elena had her own agenda.

She didn't want the money.

She wanted the person who had actually killed her sister to pay.

And in her mind,

warped by years of Warren’s lies,

that person was still Charles.

“He has to go down,”

she told the lawyer.

“If Warren is dead,

someone has to stay in the cage.”

She didn't know that Teresa Morales was currently prying up the floorboards in the Prescott library.

She didn't know that the truth was finally catching up to the lies.

She only knew the narrative she had been fed.

She was a daughter of vengeance,

and she was ready to play her final card.

The Judas kiss hadn't come from Warren;

it was coming from the girl who looked like a ghost.
