Chapter 4 - WHEN THE SYSTEM LOCKS AND THE MONEY STOPS FLOWING INTO THE HANDS OF A CRUEL TYRANT

By midday,

the Holt Table headquarters was in a state of total paralysis.

Darius had stormed into the building at 9:30 AM,

screaming at the receptionists and demanding to see the IT manager.

He had tried to log into his terminal,

only to find his credentials had been revoked.

He had tried to call his lead investor,

Sterling,

but the call went straight to voicemail.

Sterling was a man who hated scandal more than he loved profit.

And the photo of Noel’s bruised face was already trending on Twitter.

Noel watched the drama unfold through a back-door access point she had left open.

She could see the security logs.

She could see Darius’s failed attempts to access the payroll system.

He was locked out of his own life.

He was a king without a kingdom,

standing in a glass office that felt more like a cage.

She received a call from an unknown number.

She answered it.

"Noel?"

It was Darius.

His voice was shaking,

a mixture of rage and genuine fear.

"What have you done?

The cards are declined.

The staff is walking out.

Do you have any idea what this is doing to the company's valuation?"

Noel leaned back in her chair,

looking out at the rain-slicked rooftops of Wicker Park.

"The company's valuation is based on trust,

Darius,"

she said,

her voice calm and melodic.

"And you are a man no one trusts anymore."

"I'll sue you,"

he hissed.

"I'll take everything you have.

I'll tell them you were the one who was abusive.

I'll say you attacked me with that soup."

Noel laughed,

a soft,

genuine sound that seemed to enrage him even more.

"Forty witnesses,

Darius.

Forty of the most influential people in the city saw you strike me.

And the waiter has already given a statement about your 'joke.'

You can't litigate your way out of the truth."

"Where are you?"

he demanded.

"I'm coming there.

We're going to fix this right now."

"You don't know where I am,"

she replied.

"And you never will.

From now on,

you will speak to my attorneys.

Or you can speak to the press.

I hear they're very interested in the apartment you bought for Leila in Lincoln Park."

There was a long silence on the other end of the line.

Darius hadn't known she knew about the apartment.

He hadn't known she had the receipts,

the deed,

and the photos of the furniture deliveries.

"You've been planning this,"

he whispered,

the realization finally dawning on him.

"I didn't plan for you to hit me,

Darius,"

she said,

her voice dropping to a whisper.

"I just planned for the moment you finally showed everyone who you really are.

The soup was just the finishing touch."

She hung up the phone.

The silence that followed was beautiful.

It was the silence of a clean slate.

She looked at the clock.

It was time for the next phase.

May you like

The phase where she didn't just survive,

but thrived.
