Chapter 12 - The Fortress of New Beginnings

While the Vances were rot in their motel room,

Jessi Miller was breathing in the scent of lavender and fresh mountain air.

She had moved into a temporary residence—a high-security penthouse owned by her holding company,

located in the heart of downtown Boulder.

It wasn't as large as the mansion,

but it was smarter.

The glass was reinforced.

The elevators required biometric scans.

The staff was hand-picked and vetted by a private security firm.

For the first time in years,

Jessi felt safe.

She sat on a velvet sofa,

watching Lily sleep in a bassinet beside her.

The baby was growing every day,

her tiny features beginning to resemble Jessi’s own.

“She has your nose,”

Evelyn said,

walking in with two glasses of freshly pressed juice.

“And hopefully,

she has your sense of timing.”

Jessi smiled,

though the weariness was still etched in the corners of her eyes.

“I just want her to have a life where she doesn't have to look over her shoulder,”

Jessi said.

“I want her to know that her home is a place of peace,

not a battlefield.”

“Phoebe says the Vances are at a motel on Highway 36,”

Evelyn noted,

sitting down.

“They’re already talking about following you.

They want to use the 'grandma' angle for a public PR stunt.”

Jessi didn't even flinch.

She had expected it.

“Let them try,”

she said.

“The moment they step within five hundred feet of me,

the police will be notified.

I’ve already alerted the security at the pediatric clinic and the office.”

“You’re very calm,”

Evelyn observed.

“I’m not calm,”

Jessi corrected her.

“I’m finished.

There’s a difference.

When you’re still fighting,

you’re agitated.

When you’ve already won,

and you’re just waiting for the opponent to realize it,

you’re focused.”

She took a sip of her juice,

the cold liquid soothing her throat.

She had spent the morning reviewing the new expansion plans for her firm.

Without Luca’s constant "consulting fees" and the drain of his family’s lifestyle,

the company’s margins were already improving.

She was leaner,

faster,

and more powerful than she had been before the marriage.

The "Architect" wasn't just a title;

it was her soul.

She had built her career from a single desk in a shared office.

She had survived the tech bubble,

the housing crash,

and a dozen hostile takeovers.

A man like Luca was just a minor setback in the grand design of her life.

“Phoebe found something else,”

Evelyn said,

her tone turning serious.

“Something about Wendy.”

Jessi looked up.

“What?”

“It turns out Luca isn't the first person she’s 'mentored' in this way,”

Evelyn explained,

pulling out a tablet.

“Before Luca met you,

Wendy had another son—a half-brother Luca never mentioned.

He married a wealthy widow in Chicago ten years ago.

The same pattern:

the family moved in,

the bank accounts were drained,

and the wife ended up in a lengthy legal battle over a house she had owned for decades.”

Jessi felt a cold chill.

“What happened to the wife?”

“She settled,”

Evelyn said.

“She gave them three million dollars just to get them out of her life.

She was so traumatized by the harassment that she just wanted it to end.”

Jessi leaned back,

staring at the skyline.

So,

it was a family business.

A generational scam.

Wendy was the mastermind,

and her children were the tools.

They sought out successful,

perhaps lonely,

high-achieving women and turned their lives into a nightmare.

“They picked the wrong woman this time,”

Jessi whispered.

“Wendy thinks I’m like the widow in Chicago.

She thinks I’ll pay for peace.”

“What are you going to do?”

Evelyn asked.

“I’m going to make sure Wendy Vance never has a 'client' again,”

Jessi said.

“I’m not just going to divorce Luca.

I’m going to dismantle their entire operation.”

She stood up,

her C-section incision barely a twinge now.

She felt strong.

She felt capable.

She looked at Lily,

who was stirring,

her tiny hands reaching for the air.

“You’ll never know people like them,

Lily,”

Jessi promised.

“Because I’m going to make sure they disappear into the history they tried to erase.”

She picked up the phone and dialed Phoebe.

“Phoebe,”

she said,

her voice like iron.

“I want a full background check on every person Wendy Vance has spoken to in the last twenty years.

Find the victims.

Find the witnesses.

We’re not just filing for divorce.

We’re filing a RICO suit.”

The war had just escalated.

And the Vances were about to find out that when you try to scam an architect,

you end up buried in the foundation.
