Chapter 15 - THE UNHOLY ALLIANCE

The realization that Lily was still in the house sent a jolt of electricity through my veins.
I had to play the part.
I had to keep them focused on the papers while I searched for a sign.
"I'll sign,"
I said,
my voice steady.
"But I want to hear her voice first."
"Call your mother."
Sarah looked at Arthur.
He nodded.
She pulled out her phone and dialed.
The phone rang three times before a voice answered.
"Yes?"
"Mark wants to hear the girl,"
Sarah said.
She put the phone on speaker.
"Daddy?"
The voice was small,
trembling,
but it didn't sound like it was coming from a distance.
It sounded muffled.
As if it were coming through the vents.
"Lily,
sweetheart,
are you okay?"
"I'm in the secret place,
Daddy,"
she whispered.
"The one Grandma told me about."
"It's cold here."
My mind raced.
The secret place.
When she first told me about it,
she said Grandma took her there in the back seat of the car.
But that was a lie Evelyn had told her to keep her quiet about the industrial district.
The real secret place in this house.
I remembered a conversation we had when we first bought the estate.
The previous owners had been bootleggers during Prohibition.
There was a hidden crawlspace behind the wine cellar,
one that didn't appear on any blueprints.
I had shown it to Sarah once,
laughing about how it would make a great place for a panic room.
She must have told Evelyn.
But Lily...
Lily was smart.
She wouldn't just sit there.
"Tell Grandma you're sorry for being loud,
Lily,"
I said,
choosing my words carefully.
"I'm not being loud,"
Lily said,
confused.
"I'm being as quiet as a mouse."
"I'm behind the red bottles."
The wine cellar.
She was in the wine cellar,
hidden behind the vintage Bordeaux.
"Enough,"
Arthur said,
snatching the phone from Sarah.
"You've heard her."
"Sign the paper."
I leaned over the desk,
the pen hovering over the signature line.
I looked at the "acquisition" of five hundred million dollars.
It was the death warrant for the economy,
but it was the only leverage I had.
"Wait,"
I said,
frowning at the document.
"This account number is wrong."
"What?"
Arthur leaned in,
his eyes narrowing as he scanned the fine print.
"It’s correct.
The Cayman branch—"
"No,"
I said,
pointing to a string of digits.
"That’s the routing number for the New York clearing house."
"If you send it there,
the SEC will flag it instantly."
Arthur hissed in frustration,
grabbing the paper from me.
"Sarah,
check the digital copy!"
As they both turned their backs to me,
focusing on the tablet,
I moved.
I didn't run for the door.
I ran for the kitchen.
I grabbed the heavy,
cast-iron skillet from the stove and swung it with every ounce of strength I had.
It hit Arthur in the back of the head with a sickening thud.
He collapsed like a suit of empty clothes.
"Mark!"
Sarah screamed,
reaching for the silver device in her hand—a silent alarm.
I didn't stop.
I tackled her,
pinning her against the marble island.
"Where is the key to the cellar,
Sarah?"
"You’re insane!"
she shrieked,
clawing at my face.
"They'll kill you!
They'll kill her!"
"They’re already killing her!"
I yelled back.
I reached into her pocket and pulled out a heavy brass key.
I shoved her away and bolted for the basement stairs.
"Evelyn!"
Sarah screamed.
"He’s coming!"
I flew down the stairs,
my heart hammering against my ribs.
I reached the wine cellar door and shoved the key into the lock.
It turned with a heavy click.
The room was dark,
the only light coming from the small window at ground level.
"Lily!"
"Daddy!"
A section of the wall behind the wine racks swung open.
Lily scrambled out,
her face tear-stained and covered in dust.
I scooped her up,
holding her so tight I thought I might break her.
"I've got you,"
I whispered.
"I've got you."
But as I turned to head back up the stairs,
a figure stepped into the doorway.
It was Evelyn.
And she wasn't holding a handgun this time.
She was holding a detonator.
"You were always so predictable,
Mark,"
she said,
her voice calm and terrifying.
"A hero to the end."
"But heroes don't survive the Vance family."
"This house is rigged with enough C4 to level the block."
"If I don't enter the authorization code into the tablet upstairs in the next sixty seconds,
we all go to heaven together."
"Including your daughter."
I looked at the woman who had shared our holidays,
who had tucked Lily into bed.
She was a monster,
ready to sacrifice everything for a legacy that was already rotting.
"You won't do it,"
I said,
stepping back,
holding Lily behind me.
"You love the money too much."
"The money is gone,
Mark,"
she said,
a cold smile playing on her lips.
"The moment you hit Arthur,
the failsafe triggered."
"The funds are frozen."
"We have nothing left."
"Except the ending."
Suddenly,
a shadow moved behind her.
A hand reached out and grabbed her wrist,
twisting the detonator away.
It was Sarah.
"No,
Mother,"
Sarah whispered,
her eyes filled with a sudden,
shattering clarity.
"The ending is mine."
She shoved Evelyn into the cellar and slammed the heavy oak door,
locking it from the outside.
She looked at me through the small iron grate.
"Run,
Mark."
"Take her and run."
"Sarah,
come with us!"
"I can't,"
she said,
tears streaming down her face.
"I'm a Vance."
"And the Vances have to pay their debts."
She turned and ran back up the stairs.
I didn't wait.
I grabbed Lily and sprinted for the mudroom,
bursting out into the morning air.
I ran until we reached the stone wall at the edge of the property.
The explosion didn't sound like a bomb.
It sounded like a heavy,
muffled sigh.
The Greenwich estate,
the symbol of my success and my failure,
collapsed in a cloud of white dust and lavender-scented air.
I sat on the ground,
holding Lily,
watching as the smoke rose into the clear blue sky.
The ghosts were finally gone.
But as I looked down at Lily’s hand,
I saw she was clutching something.
It was the black laptop from the wine cellar.
"I found it in the secret place,
Daddy,"
she whispered.
"I thought you might need it."
I opened the lid.
The screen was still active.
And there,
in the center of the display,
was a single message from an encrypted source:

THE SECOND RECKONING BEGINS NOW.
The Vance family was dead.
