Chapter 8 - The Forgotten Son

The hospital room went completely silent. The only sound was the steady, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor.
I stared at Thomas, the color draining from my face.
Our son?
"Thomas, honey," I said gently, trying to mask my rising panic. "You're confused. The doctors said you might be disoriented. We don't have a son. We only have Emma."
Thomas's grip on my wrist tightened, his knuckles turning white. His eyes, though cloudy from the long coma, were fiercely lucid.
"No," Thomas rasped, his voice tearing at his dry throat. "I remember. Before the pain... before the hospital... I hid him, Caroline. I hid him from them."
I felt the blood roaring in my ears.
I looked back toward the heavy wooden door of the hospital room. Luca was standing just outside in the hallway, talking quietly with the federal agents.
I turned back to my husband. "Thomas, what are you talking about? Who did you hide?"
Thomas closed his eyes, a single tear slipping down his gaunt cheek. He looked exhausted, the effort of speaking draining his fragile strength.
"The Bellinis," Thomas whispered. "They found out who I was, Caroline. They found out my mother was Teresa Moretti. They came to the apartment while you were at work."
My mind raced back eight years. I had been working a double shift at a local diner. Emma was ten, at school. Thomas was supposed to be home, grading math papers.
"They told me if I didn't cooperate," Thomas choked out, "if I didn't surrender to Marco Bellini... they would kill you and Emma."
"So you went with them," I sobbed, the realization breaking my heart all over again. He hadn't just collapsed at work. He had sacrificed himself to save us.
"I tried to fight," Thomas said weakly. "But they injected me with something. Before I went completely dark... I managed to hide the boy."
"Thomas," I pleaded, grabbing both his hands. "Please. What boy? We never had a son."
Thomas opened his eyes, looking at me with absolute devastation.
"Not our biological son, Caroline," Thomas whispered. "Luca's son."
The heart monitor spiked, but it was my own heart that felt like it was going to explode.
"Luca doesn't have a son," I said, my voice trembling. "He doesn't have any children."
"He did," Thomas corrected, his voice fading. "Fourteen years ago. Before he became the boss. He fell in love with a civilian girl. When the Moretti family found out, my father... Antonio Moretti... ordered a hit on her to keep the bloodline pure. He didn't want a half-breed heir."
I covered my mouth in horror. The cruelty of the mafia world was bottomless.
"The girl died," Thomas continued, coughing weakly. "But she gave birth before she passed. Antonio ordered the baby drowned. But the hitman... he couldn't do it. He brought the baby to me in secret. He knew I was Teresa's lost son. He begged me to hide the child."
My mind spun. "You hid Luca's son? For six years?"
"I couldn't tell you," Thomas pleaded, tears streaming down his face. "If you knew, they would kill you. I forged adoption papers. I put him in a private boarding school upstate under the name Leo Hayes. I told them I was his uncle."
I remembered the unexplained deductions from our bank account years ago. I had always assumed Thomas was paying off student loans. He was paying private school tuition to hide his nephew from the mafia.
"When Marco Bellini took me," Thomas gasped, his eyes rolling back slightly as exhaustion overtook him, "I refused to tell him where the boy was. That's why he kept me alive. He wanted the true Moretti heir."
"Thomas," I cried, realizing he was slipping back into unconsciousness.
"Find him, Caroline," Thomas whispered, his eyes closing completely. "Find Leo. Before Marco's men do."
The heart monitor settled into a slow, steady rhythm. Thomas was asleep.
I stumbled backward, hitting the wall of the hospital room.
I burst through the heavy wooden door into the hallway.
Luca turned around from his conversation with Agent Vance, seeing the sheer panic on my face.
"Caroline? Is he okay? Did he code?" Luca asked urgently, rushing toward me.
"He's asleep," I gasped, grabbing Luca’s lapels. "Luca... you have a son."
Luca froze.
The federal agents in the hallway stopped talking.
Luca stared down at me, his dark eyes wide with shock. "What did you just say?"
"Fourteen years ago," I said rapidly, the words tumbling out of my mouth. "A civilian girl. Antonio ordered her killed, but the hitman spared the baby. He gave the baby to Thomas."
Luca stumbled backward as if I had shot him. His back hit the corridor wall.
"Elena," Luca whispered, the name tearing from his lips like a prayer. "She was pregnant when my father... when she died."
He looked at me, his eyes filling with tears of profound, agonizing grief and sudden, terrifying hope.
"He's alive?" Luca choked out. "My son is alive?"
"Thomas hid him," I confirmed. "He put him in a boarding school upstate under the name Leo Hayes. He's fourteen years old, Luca."
Luca covered his mouth with his hand, sinking slightly against the wall. The ruthless, untouchable mafia boss was completely dismantled by the revelation that he was a father.
But the tender moment lasted only a fraction of a second.
Agent Vance stepped forward, his face grim. "If Thomas just told you this... it means Marco Bellini was looking for the boy."
Luca’s head snapped up, the lethal protector instantly emerging.
"Marco kept Thomas alive to torture the location out of him," Luca realized aloud, his voice dropping into a deadly cadence. "But Marco was arrested tonight. If Marco thinks he's going to spend the rest of his life in federal prison..."
"He'll use his last remaining asset to buy his freedom," Vance finished, pulling out his cell phone. "He'll trade the location of the true Moretti heir to your rival families in exchange for them breaking him out."
"Where is Marco right now?" Luca demanded, grabbing Vance’s jacket.
"He's in a federal transport van heading to the MCC," Vance said, checking his phone.
Vance’s face drained of color.
"Agent Vance," Luca roared. "Where is he?!"
May you like
Vance looked up, pure terror in his eyes.
"The transport van was just ambushed on the Danryan Expressway," Vance whispered. "Marco is gone."
