Chapter 9 - A Tear in the Fabric

Friday morning arrived with the promise of utter,

spectacular chaos.

Calvin,

despite losing his primary investor,

was still desperately trying to maintain his day job at the investment firm.

He was a senior portfolio manager,

a position that required him to project absolute stability,

wealth,

and competence to his wealthy clients.

According to his shared digital calendar,

which he had foolishly forgotten to lock me out of,

he had a mandatory,

in-person presentation in the main boardroom at ten o'clock.

He would be standing in front of the firm's partners,

trying to pitch a new strategy,

desperate to prove he was still a valuable asset despite the rumors that were undoubtedly starting to circulate.

I sat in the lobby of a coffee shop directly across the street from his office building,

sipping a latte,

watching the digital clock on my phone tick closer to ten.

I thought about the heavy-duty scissors I had used in our bedroom closet three days ago.

I thought about the meticulous,

invisible cuts I had made to the inner seams of every single suit he owned.

At ten-fifteen,

my phone buzzed with a text message from a sympathetic receptionist inside Calvin's firm,

a woman who had always liked me and absolutely despised Calvin's arrogance.

"You are not going to believe what just happened,"

the message read,

followed by three shocked emojis.

I smiled,

taking a slow sip of my coffee.

"Tell me everything,"

I typed back.

Her response came in a flurry of rapid texts,

painting a picture so vivid and hilarious that I almost laughed out loud in the quiet cafe.

"He was in the middle of the Q&A session,"

she wrote,

"standing at the front of the boardroom with all the senior partners watching."

"He dropped his laser pointer,"

she continued,

"and when he bent down to pick it up,

the entire back seam of his trousers ripped open."

I covered my mouth to muffle my laughter,

imagining the horrifying sound of tearing fabric echoing in a silent boardroom.

"It wasn't just a small tear,"

the receptionist updated eagerly,

"it split from his belt line all the way down to his knee!

His bright red boxers were on full display for the entire executive committee!"

I felt a tear of pure joy slip down my cheek.

"What did he do?"

I replied,

my fingers flying across the screen.

"He panicked,"

she answered,

"he tried to stand up quickly to cover it,

and when he yanked his arms back,

the seams under the armpits of his suit jacket completely shredded!

He looked like a man exploding out of his clothes like the Incredible Hulk,

but pathetic!"

I leaned back in my chair,

savoring the mental image of my cheating,

thieving husband standing half-naked and humiliated in front of the people he respected most.

"The managing partner actually told him to leave the room,"

the final text read,

"he had to waddle out of the boardroom sideways,

holding his pants together with his hands,

and he is currently hiding in his office refusing to open the door."

It was petty,

it was childish,

and it was absolutely magnificent.

He had stripped me of my dignity in my own home,

and now,

I had literally stripped him of his dignity in his professional sanctuary.

But the wardrobe malfunction was merely the appetizer.

The main course was currently walking through the revolving doors of his office building,

carrying a stack of legal documents that would finalize his destruction.

I watched through the cafe window as two process servers,

dressed in sharp,

inconspicuous suits,

breezed past the security desk with grim determination.

May you like

Calvin thought he was hiding from a ripped pair of pants,

but he was about to realize that the fabric of his entire life had just been torn to pieces.
