Chapter 9 - [THE BLACKMAIL BRIDE]

Vanessa stepped out of the town car.
She looked flawless. No tears. No panic. Just cold calculation.
The police officers immediately moved to intercept her.
"Vanessa Bellini, you are under arrest for conspiracy—"
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," Vanessa said loudly, holding up the piece of paper.
She looked directly at Luca.
"Because as of 3:00 PM yesterday afternoon, my last name isn't Bellini."
Luca froze. "What are you talking about?"
Vanessa walked forward, stopping just out of the officers' reach.
"Marco and I eloped at the courthouse yesterday. I am a Moretti."
"That doesn't grant you immunity from the law, Vanessa," the detective sneered.
"No," Vanessa smiled. "But it grants me spousal privilege. I cannot be compelled to testify against Marco. And more importantly, as his legal wife, I have power of attorney over his assets."
She looked at Luca, her eyes gleaming with triumph.
"Those offshore accounts? Marco transferred them into a joint trust yesterday morning. If you arrest me, the money gets locked in international probate for decades. The Moretti family goes bankrupt tonight."
Luca stared at her.
She had outplayed them all. She had secured the money before Marco even tried to take the necklace.
"So here is my offer," Vanessa said, smoothing her skirt. "Let Marco take the fall for the attempted murder. Let Elena rot for her hit squad. And you and I, Luca, we split the empire. Fifty-fifty. I walk away free, and the Moretti family survives."
The silence on the driveway was heavy.
The detective looked at Luca, waiting for his call.
Luca stood perfectly still. He looked at the mansion he grew up in. The empire built on blood and lies.
Then he looked at me.
He saw the bruise forming on my cheek. He saw David clutching my hand, terrified.
Luca took a deep breath.
"Burn it," Luca said.
Vanessa's smile faltered. "What?"
"Burn the empire," Luca said, his voice loud and clear. "Freeze the accounts. Let it rot in probate. I don't care."
"You're bluffing," Vanessa panicked. "You'll lose everything! The house, the businesses, the power!"
"I already lost everything that mattered," Luca said. He turned to the detective. "Arrest her."
"No!" Vanessa shrieked as the officers grabbed her arms, snapping handcuffs onto her wrists. "Luca, you need me! You have nothing without that money!"
"I have my soul," Luca said quietly.
He turned his back on her as she was shoved into the back of a squad car, screaming curses into the night.
The police finished clearing the house.
Anthony was taken away in an ambulance under police guard. Elena and Marco were transported to the precinct.
The Moretti empire was officially dead.
Luca stood alone on the driveway, his hands in his pockets.
He looked exhausted. Defeated. But somehow, lighter.
I walked over to him.
"Luca?" I said softly.
He looked down at me and offered a small, tired smile.
"I'm sorry, Emily. For everything."
"You didn't do it," I said. "You saved us."
David walked up beside me. He reached into his pocket and held out the heavy iron key Luca had given him earlier.
"The safe," David said. "With the half-million dollars. The police didn't find it."
Luca shook his head. "Keep it. It's clean money. It belonged to my grandmother. Use it for college. Buy a house. Start a real life."
"We can't take all of this," I said, tears filling my eyes.
"You have to," Luca insisted. "Consider it a late apology for the last twenty years."
David looked at me, then at Luca. "What are you going to do?"
"I'm going to cooperate with the authorities," Luca said. "I'll probably do a few years in minimum security for racketeering. But when I get out... I'm going to open a restaurant. A small one. Something quiet."
I smiled, a real, genuine smile. "I make a pretty good cup of tea."
Luca laughed, the sound warm and rich.
"I'll keep that in mind, Emily."
A few months later, justice was served.
Anthony passed away in the prison hospital. Elena and Marco were given life sentences. Vanessa took a plea deal, turning on her father to save herself, but still ended up behind bars.
David graduated at the top of his class and accepted a job at a prestigious architecture firm.
With the money Luca gave us, we bought a beautiful little house in the suburbs.
For the first time in our lives, we felt safe. We belonged.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, I was sitting on our new porch, drinking a cup of Earl Grey tea.
The mailman walked up and handed me a small, brown package.
No return address.
I opened it.
Inside was a silver tea spoon.
And a handwritten note.
Parole hearing is next month. Save me a seat at the table. - L.
I smiled, tracing the silver spoon with my thumb.
The past was finally buried.

And the future was just beginning.
